WBCA announces Division 2 Boys Basketball All-State Team

John Diener of Cedarburg, Tyler Herro of Whitnall, Kobe King of La Crosse Central, Mitch Listau of Waunakee and Jordan McCabe of Kaukauna are unanimous first-team selections on the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 2 All-State squad.

Diener, a 6-foot-4 junior guard who has committed to DePaul University, set a WIAA State Tournament all-division record for most points scored in a game when he had 46 in the Bulldogs’ double overtime victory over Milwaukee Washington in the state semifinals. Diener also scored 25 points in the Bulldogs’ 55-53 loss to La Crosse Central in the Division 2 title game. The Player of the Year in the North Shore Conference, Diener averaged 22.9 points and 6.4 rebounds while shooting 46 percent from the floor and 84 percent from the foul line as the Bulldogs finished with a 25-3 mark.

Herro, a 6-foot-5 wing guard who has committed to the University of Wisconsin, missed 10 games due to an injury, but the exceptionally skilled junior nonetheless was named Player of the Year in the Woodland East Conference. Herro averaged 23.2 points and 4.5 assists while tying a career-high with 45 points in a loss to Division 4 state champion Destiny. In three years of varsity play, Herro has scored 1,313 points. 

King, a 6-foot-4 wing guard who has committed to the University of Wisconsin, was named Mr. Basketball by the WBCA and led La Crosse Central to its first state title in boys’ basketball since 1925 by averaging 27.0 points per game for coach Todd Fergot. An athletic and skilled player who does a bit of everything on the court, King also averaged 9.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists while shooting 62 percent from the field. 

Listau is a 6-foot-3 junior wing guard who was chosen Player of the Year in the Northern Division of the Badger Conference. Already a three-year varsity performer for coach Dana MacKenzie, Listau averaged 22.2 points and 4.3 rebounds and helped Waunakee to a 24-3 record and a spot in the WIAA Division 2 State Tournament for the second year in a row. 

McCabe played all but a few games with his backcourt sidekick – senior Adam Smith – sidelined with foot injuries. Still, the 6-foot-0 junior point guard and West Virginia recruit averaged 25.1 points while helping Kaukauna to a 16-10 record. He scored a career-high 46 points in a loss to rival Kimberly and enters his senior season with 1,694 career points.

Senior Alou Dillon of Wauwatosa West put up some impressive numbers for the Trojans, who finished 12-11. The 6-foot-8 South Dakota State recruit averaged 17.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.6 blocked shots per outing and was voted Player of the Year in the Western Division of the Woodland Conference. 

La Crosse Central senior Bailey Kale completed a brilliant four-year varsity career with the Red Raiders by scoring 15 points in the Division 2 state-title game victory over Cedarburg. The 6-foot-0 guard and NCAA Division II recruit for Minnesota-Duluth averaged 17.6 points and 3.4 assists while helping La Crosse Central to a 26-2 record. 

Ryan Krueger of Hortonville finished among the state’s leaders in three-point field goals made with 94 despite being one of just two returning regulars for the Polar Bears, who compete in the highly competitive Fox Valley Association. The 6-foot-5 senior wing guard and South Dakota State recruit averaged 22.2 points and scored a career-high 34 points in a game against Oshkosh West.

Sophomore Deontay Long of Milwaukee Washington put up some very impressive numbers for such a young player competing in one of the state’s toughest conferences. The first-team all-Milwaukee City Conference pick averaged 19.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.3 assists while helping the Purgolders to a share of the City Conference title along with Milwaukee Riverside and Milwaukee Vincent. The physically strong 6-foot-5 wing player had eight points, seven rebounds and five assists in the Pugolders’ 73-70 double overtime loss to Cedarburg in the Division 2 state semifinals.

Senior point guard Garrett Nelson (6-0) led Beaver Dam to one of its most successful seasons ever by averaging 20.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. The Beavers finished 23-2 and won the Wisconsin Little Ten Conference title in the final year of the league’s existence. Nelson was named Player of the Year in the league.
