Rally of the Week: Suicide squeeze caps four-run walk-off rally for Portage

We said it last week, but there really isn't much that can compete with a walk-off on the diamond, and we can't get enough of them.

This week's focus is one the even more rare walk-off suicide squeeze. For the Portage baseball team, there was work to be done just to get in the position, as the Warriors trailed McFarland 7-4 in the bottom of the 7th inning in a non-conference game on Monday.

“Our back was to the wall, there was no time left and we couldn’t cut the lead anymore,” head coach Mike Hemming told the Portage Daily Register. “We had to take a stand, win the game right then and there and we did that.”

The Warriors got some things going right away, loading the bases with no outs. They'd score the first run on a McFarland error before senior Avery Alexander ripped a double to left-center to plate a pair of runs and tie it up.

McFarland would get an out at home on a fielder's choice, but Portage had a trick up its sleeve the next play.

Xander Straka dropped down a suicide squeeze bunt, scoring Alexander to give the Warriors a walk-off, or bunt-off as it were, victory.

“We were like the older brother teasing the little sister all game long and then finally stopped when we had a chance to get after it,” said Hemming.
