There was a lot on the line for the Baraboo baseball team last Thursday as they took on league rival DeForest. A victory, something that had eluded the Thunderbirds in the last game against Waunakee, would secure the team's first Badger-North Conference title since 2006.
It didn't look good for a while, as the visiting Thunderbirds trailed DeForest 2-1 heading into the seventh inning. Baraboo got a rally going however, as Thor Gust reached via an error and Mason Peterson singled with one out. Tom Ginther found himself behind in the count 0-2, but the next pitch was in his wheelhouse, and he knocked it out of the park for a go-ahead three-run homer to put Baraboo up 4-2.
They'd tack on an insurance run and DeForest would get one of their own in the bottom half of the inning, but in the end, Baraboo claimed a 5-3 win and the Badger-North title.
In addition to his heroics at the plate, Ginther threw a complete game on the mound with six strikeouts, allowing two earned runs.
“It’s been 11 years, and the guys knew that so they’re really excited right now,” coach Steve Considine told the Baraboo New Republic. “It’s just a testament to the hard-working kids that we have in this program. The 6 a.m. lifts, their workouts in the offseason, they’re doing the little things and in my mind, these kids are the hardest workers around. They earned this, they didn’t get lucky, they worked for this. It was a true team win, a team sport so it’s pretty special.”
