WisSports.net Week 1 Player of the Week Nominees:

John Chenal, Grantsburg -- In a wild game that saw the teams combine for the second-most total yards of offense in state history, Grantsburg's John Chenal had a huge night in a 72-52 victory over Cumberland. The senior North Dakota commit carried the ball 32 times for 435 yards and 6 touchdowns, averaging 13.6 yards per carry. The 435 yards places him ninth on the state's single-game rushing list. That wasn't all he did though. He also caught two passes for 22 yards, recorded three tackles, and had a kickoff return for 23 yards.

Jackson Enz, Big Foot -- Rivals Big Foot and Brodhead/Juda got after it right away in Week 1, and not surprisingly, the ultra-versatile Enz was the key as the Chieftains scored a 47-27 victory. The North Dakota State recruit threw for 272 yards and 2 touchdowns, had 137 yards rushing with 3 more scores on the ground, caught a pass for 25 yards, recorded 9 tackles, punted twice with a 41.5-yard average, and recorded 73 yards in kick returns.

Henry Geil, Green Bay Preble -- Despite a 5-5 finish last year, there are big expectations at Preble, which returns a boatload of talent heading into 2017. The Hornets had a chance to make an early statement on Thursday against Ashwaubenon, and Geil helped do just that. The senior Iowa recruit went for 215 yards and 2 touchdowns on 33 carries, as his bruising running style banged away at the Jaguars defense all night.

Zach Krause, Clinton -- Last season's co-champs in the Rock Valley Conference met up right out of the games in 2017, as Clinton traveled to Evansville/Albany. The Cougars rushing attack was among the state's best last season, and showed it's ready to be one of the elites again this year. The team rushed for 416 yards, with Krause doing most of the damage to the tune of 23 carries for 307 yards and 2 touchdowns, averaging 13.3 yards per carry. That included a 58-yard touchdown run to open the scoring and a 99-yarder in the second quarter.

Zach Ruf, Bloomer -- Bloomer and Somerset have met up in early-season non-conference games for a number of years, and this year's was among the wildest. The teams were tied at 24 at halftime, though Somerset held a 38-32 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Ruf would account for a pair of fourth quarter scores, including the game winner with six and a half minutes remaining as Bloomer won 46-38. Ruf threw for 216 yards and 2 touchdowns, while adding 27 carries for 145 yards and 3 more scores on the ground.
