Week 1 Team of the Week Nominees:

Fennimore -- Fennimore and neighboring Lancaster have played early-season non-conference games against each other for several years, and Lancaster has gotten the upper-hand most often. Things were different this year however, as the Golden Eagles of Fennimore broke open a halftime tie with a couple third quarter touchdowns, holding on for an 18-13 victory. In his first varsity start, Reid Larson threw for 289 yards and 2 touchdowns, as both Liam Kenney (7 catches, 98 yards, 1 TD) and Trevor Neuroth (10, 129, 1) had big games receiving.

Kimberly -- In our Game of the Week poll on WSN, 59% of people picked Fond du Lac to end Kimberly's 56-game winning streak, as the Cardinals feature a large amount of returning starters, while Kimberly only brings back a handful. It was a very competitive game, never separated by more than one score. Kimberly tied things up early in the fourth quarter, then went ahead, but missed the extra point. Fond du Lac would drive for a go-ahead touchdown and extra point with 3:25 left, but that was just enough time for the Papermakers to mount their comeback. First-year starter Alec Rosner engineered a drive that ended with D.J. Stewart plunging in from two yards out, and Kimberly withstood a late rally by Fondy, as Drew VanderMissen picked off a pass in the end zone on the final play to preserve a 35-28 Kimberly win. It extends the Papermakers' nation-best winning streak to 57 games.

Neenah -- There are big expectations for Stevens Point this year after the Panthers advanced to the state semi-finals last season. 2017 didn't start off the way they'd planned however, as Neenah made a big-time statement in a dominating 38-6 victory. Stevens Point actually got on the board first, but Neenah scored 28 second-quarter points before cruising home for the win. Quarterback Alec Elkin had a big game, throwing three touchdowns and rushing for another. Receiver Rayce Prosser caught 9 passes for 214 yards and 3 scores in the game. The defense held SPASH to just 117 yards of offense.

West Bend East -- Perhaps it is only fitting that with the solar eclipse getting so much attention this week, that the Suns of West Bend East played some dominating football on Friday night. The team has struggled the last few years and hasn't made the playoffs since the 2011 season. Meanwhile, Cedarburg is a perennial playoff entrant. You'd have thought those roles were reversed, as West Bend East put a running clock on the Bulldogs in a 48-6 domination. The team rolled up 332 rushing yards, as both Kyle Yochem (168) and Christian Hernandez (107) eclipsed the century mark. Quarterback T.J Simpson hit on some huge plays, completing 8 of 14 passes for 165 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Westby -- Darlington held a 14-12 lead and was driving inside the red zone late in the fourth quarter of a non-conference match-up, but the Norsemen kept their hopes alive by forcing a fumble that was recovered at their own 15-yard line. Undeterred by three earlier interceptions, Westby junior quarterback Alex Gluch helped guide a drive that chewed up clock, setting up a potential game-winning 25-yard field goal. Grant Dayton nailed it through as time expired as the Norsemen defeated the four-time Division 6 runner-up Redbirds 15-14.
