Week 1 WisSports.net Coaches Poll

Please note, divisional placement in our poll is based on our Enrollment Projections done earlier this year. Divisional placement in the WIAA playoffs is not determined until after the season and these projections can and will be different than the divisions at the end of the year. We have added an 8-Man Coaches Poll this season.

Division 1

No shocker here, as four-time defending state champion Kimberly is a unanimous #1 after a thrilling comeback victory over Fond du Lac. Speaking of the Cardinals, despite the loss, they are #5 this week as the only team with a loss to be ranked. Franklin is second, followed by Sun Prairie and Bay Port. Badger and Wisconsin Rapids are tied for the 10th and final spot. Despite impressive victories in Week 1, Green Bay Preble and Neenah are just outside the rankings this week, though that could change very soon.

Division 2

Division 2 is loaded once again, with Waunakee getting an edge in the top spot to begin the season. The Warriors beat up on Fort Atkinson in Week 1 to the tune of 49-0. Brookfield Central was also an impressive winner in Week 1 and occupies the #2 position. Homestead, Waukesha West, and Menasha round out the top five.

Division 3

After a state championship last season, Catholic Memorial opens as the favorite to repeat in 2017. Notre Dame is second, with Whitefish Bay sitting at third. The Blue Dukes have been in D2 the last few seasons, but sit very close to the cutline this year, as we project them into D3 currently.

Division 4

Defending champion Saint Croix Central opened the season with a solid win over a very good Durand team, and hold down the top spot in the rankings as a result. Fellow Middle Border Conference member Osceola is second, with Capitol-North foes Lodi and Lake Mills right behind.

Division 5

Two-time defending state champion Amherst was a unanimous pick atop the Division 5 poll to start the season. Another familiar name, Stanley-Boyd, is second after opening with a win over Stratford. Spencer/Columbus Catholic is third, as Clinton and Racine St. Catherine's round out the top five.

Division 6

Not surprisingly, Saint Mary's Springs is ranked #1 to start the season in 2017 after an impressive opening win over Markesan. Defending champion Regis is right behind in second, followed by Grantsburg. Fennimore's victory over Lancaster puts the Golden Eagles into the rankings for the first time in several years at #6. Perhaps most interesting is who isn't ranked: four-time runner-up Darlington, who fell on a last second field goal to Westby.

Division 7

Defending state champion Edgar opened with a 15-0 shutout of much larger Baldwin-Woodville and is a near-unanimous choice atop the rankings in Division 7. Bangor saw plenty of support as well, coming in second, with Black Hawk close behind in third. Abbotsford played in D6 last year but is projected into Division 7 this season, coming in 4th in the first poll.

8-Man Football

A 106-0 victory by Luck over Clayton was a hot topic of discussion over the weekend, though the Cardinals ran just 26 offensive plays in the entire game. Luck does get the top spot in the first 8-Man poll of the year though, with an explosive Oakfield team close behind. Unofficial defending state champion Abundant Life/St. Ambrose is 4th. There are three newcomers to 8-Man Football in the top ten: #6 Newman Catholic, #8 Phillips, and #10 New Auburn.
