Many high school football standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 4 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Alumni Update

10,000. That’s the other-worldly number of straight snaps Brookfield Central alumn Joe Thomas has played in his NFL career. The NFL’s Iron Man has started an astounding 162 straight games at left tackle for the Cleveland Browns since being drafted in the 2007 NFL draft.

A much younger in-state athlete piled up some big numbers in NFL action over the weekend. Alex Erickson, graduate of Darlington High School, recorded 202 all-purpose yards for the Cincinnati Bengals in their 13-9 loss to the Houston Texans. The second year wideout had over 60 receiving yards and 130 return yards on the day.

Linebacker Nick Pridgeon, formerly of Wauwatosa East, earned Northern Sun Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week honors. The linebacker was a turnover machine on the day recording a fumble recovery, and 2 interceptions to help Winona State to a 42-14 win over Minnesota Moorehead. Teammate and freshman Sam Santiago-Lloyd (Brookfield East) rushed for his first touchdown in the game as well.

Two former Barron High School teammates had great days receiving for their respective Northern Sun teams. Isaiah Frandsen had 129 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns for Winona State. His former teammate Jason Balts had 130 yards receiving and 1 touchdown for Minnesota Duluth.

Minnesota Duluth’s quarterback Ben Everhart (Eau Claire Memorial) got his first start and threw for 325 yards and 2 touchdowns in their 38-23 loss to Minnesota State Mankato.

In other Northern Sun action, St. Cloud State got contributions from multiple in-state players in their 56-21 win over Concordia St. Paul. Dwayne Lawhorn (Greendale) threw for 254 yards and 4 touchdowns, as well as rushing for 73 yards and a score. Gregory Lewis (Wauwatosa West) rushed for 2 scores, while Matt Winter (Homestead) recorded his first career rushing touchdown. Jon Deprey (Luxemburg-Casco) also rushed for his first score for Upper Iowa in their 31-15 win over Northern State. Nothern State’s Preston Droessler (Cuba City) recorded his first career sack in the game.

The Iowa Hawkeyes were led to victory again this week by sophomore quarterback Nathan Stanley. The Menomonie graduate threw for 197 yards and 2 touchdowns in the Hawkeyes’ 31-24 win over North Texas. Stanley has thrown for Big Ten leading, 10 touchdowns already in the early part of the season. Freshman running back Toren Young saw his first action this weekend as well for the Hawkeyes. The Monona Grove alumn got his first rushes and totaled 81 yards on the ground.

Former Waunakee standout Jacob Ohnesorge was recognized this week as the Missouri Valley Conference’s Offensive Lineman of the Week. In his 42nd straight start, he helped South Dakota State to a resounding 51-10 victory over Drake.

In other MVC action, Illinois State safety Mitchell Brees (Greendale) recorded his second interception in as many games in a 44-13 win over Eastern Illinois. Teammate Adam Conley (Franklin) recorded a sack for the Redbirds. Elsewhere, Daurice Fountain had another big day in Northern Iowa’s 24-21 loss to Southern Utah. The Madison Memorial standout had 8 catches for 138 yards.

The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) recognized two in-state athletes for their players of the week.

Stanley-Boyd graduate Ronny Ponick rushed for 190 yards and a score for UW-Whitewater to earn WIAC’s Offensive Player of the Week. Warhawk’s defensive lineman Harry Henschler (Janesville Craig) recorded 3 sacks to earn the WIAC’s Defensive Player of the Week honors. Mitchell Dess (South Milwaukee), Adam Korpela (St. Francis), and Canton Larson (Oconomowoc) each had receiving touchdowns in the Whitewater’s 40-21 win over Washington (MO). On the other side of the ball, Matt Seitz (Arrowhead), Dalton Heckel (Wilmot), and Latron Kirk-Sprewer (Franklin) each recorded at least one sack.

A few other players had their firsts around the nation in the third weekend of the college football season. Jordan Argue (Arrowhead) recorded his first 5 receptions in Princeton’s 27-17 win over San Diego. Tyler Terveer had his first 2 sacks for the Drake Bulldogs. Also, our own 2016 John Anderson Award winner Matt Lorbeck of Bay Port recorded his first tackle in Northern Illinois’ 21-17 win over Nebraska.
