Many high school football standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 4 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Alumni Update

Lance Kendricks has been a tight end in the National Football League for 7 years now. In that time, he’s hauled in 17 touchdowns for the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams. This past weekend saw the former Milwaukee King standout record his first touchdown for the hometown Green Bay Packers. Another in-state alumnus, Marwin Evans, recorded his first start for the Packers. The Oak Creek graduate had 5 tackles in the Packers 27-24 overtime win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Former in-state athletes continue to dominate the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s (WIAC) players of the week honors. UW-La Crosse’s Brandon McKandes garnered Defensive Player of the Week honors. The Oconomowoc graduate recorded 5 tackles, 2 for loss, and a sack in La Crosse’s 41-6 win over Carroll University. Teammate Ryan Kruser (Waunakee) won Special Team’s Player of the Week honors by returning a punt 58 yards for a touchdown.

In other WIAC play, Matt Urmanski (Edgar) saw extended action at quarterback for UW-Stevens Point. He threw for 4 touchdowns in their 41-28 win over Adrian College. Wide receiver Jerry Williams (Watertown) hauled in 3 of those touchdowns as well as 123 receiving yards. That makes an incredible 6 touchdowns through 3 games for the Pointer’s wideout. Elsewhere, Tyler Blang (Monona Grove) also threw for 4 touchdowns as UW-Platteville beat Lakeland 56-22.

Drake University was once again led by two in-state wide receivers in their 38-13 win over Valpariso. Mitch McFarlane (Winnebago Lutheran) hauled in 7 catches for 118 yards while teammate Steven Doran (Germantown) had 4 catches for 84 yards and a touchdown.

St. Norbert’s College was aided greatly by in-state recruits in their 66-13 win over Grinnell College. Elijah Fort (Waukesha West) and Nate Nelson (Waupaca) rushed for over a combined 250 yards and 3 touchdowns while Drew Rhodes (Waukesha West) returned a punt 60 yards for a score. Wideout Samuel Stahling continued his hot start on the season recording 3 touchdowns. This brings his early season total to 5. Defensively, Algoma graduates Sam Koss and Hunter Prokash, as well as Wilmot’s Carson Borowski each had an interception.

Former Franklin standout Sean McGuire was absolutely on fire this past weekend in Western Illinois’ 52-10 win over Coastal Carolina. The quarterback went 17 of 19 for 276 yards and 3 touchdowns, as well as a receiving touchdown in the win. His completion percentage of 89.5% is the best in a game in Western Illinois history. His performance also earned him Missouri Valley Football Conference’s (MVFC) Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors. His wide receiver and Mount Horeb alumnus, Isaiah LeSure was the one to throw the touchdown to his quarterback.

In other MVFC action, Illinois State again got a sack from Franklin grad Adam Conley, his second in as many games. Teammate Ty DeForest (Marshall) also recorded his first sack in the 34-9 win over Missouri State. Also, Ross Kennelly (Superior) got his first sack for North Dakota State, as they beat Robert Morris 56-0. Logan McCormick (Kimberly) recorded a force fumble in the game as well.

In Northern Sun action, St. Cloud State again got great contributions from in-state alumni in their 26-14 win over Augustana. Justin Czech (Chippewa Falls) got his first start and threw for his first career touchdown. Carvel Graham (Kenosha Bradford) recorded an interception for the winning team. Elsewhere, offensive lineman Nick Zimmerman (Laconia), Elijah Perine (Homestead), and Nolan Kern (Regis) helped the University of Sioux Falls rush for 296 yards in their 34-0 win over Minnesota Crookston.

In other Northern Sun play, Ben Everhart threw for 422 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for a score, in Minnesota Duluth’s 34-31 win over Wayne State. Teammate Jason Balts (Barron) had 9 catches for an astounding 217 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Justic’e King (Milwaukee King) had his first ever interception, while Beau Reder (Superior) got his first sack.

Finally, sophomore quarterback Nathan Stanley continues to play at a high level for the Iowa Hawkeyes, as he has been mentioned in every installment of the Alumni Round-up thus far. The Menomonie graduate threw for nearly 200 yards and another 2 touchdowns in a disheartening 21-19 last second loss to 4th ranked Penn State.
