A 37-yard field goal by River Falls junior Luke Nelson with seven seconds remaining lifted the Wildcats to a 32-30 Homecoming victory over Superior last Friday, and it was a moment he'd been thinking about for some time.
"It was cool because on the way here I was thinking on the bus ride, what if I make the game-winner tonight?" he told the River Falls Journal. "I've been thinking about it a long time and it finally came true. I was ready for it and I was confident.”
A wild fourth quarter, which began with the score tied at 15, had both teams experiencing big momentum and emotional swings. The teams traded scores, but Superior went up 30-29 on a 55-yard touchdown from Jarrett Gronski to Max Plunkett, with Gronski taking in the two-point conversion for the lead.
River Falls got the ball back on its own 34-yard line, with 2:14 left in the game and no timeouts. The Wildcats converted a fourth and eight and were aided by an unsportsmanlike penalty on Superior, eventually getting the ball down to the 20-yard line to set up Nelson's game-winning kick.
It was the first win of the year for River Falls.
