River Ridge is back in the playoffs for the first time since 2010
The high school football playoffs begin on Friday night with Level 1 action around the state, and we take a look at changes for the postseason this year, including teams that missed out after qualifying last year, teams that qualified for the postseason after missing last year, and teams that changed divisions compared to last season.
- There are 52 teams that are different in 2017 than qualified in 2016.
- McDonell Central made the playoffs in 2016 but moved to 8-Man Football in 2017, though the Macks ended up canceling their varsity season.
- Pepin/Alma became a co-op program in 2008, making the playoffs every year since, until this season. The Pepin team also made the playoffs from 2002 to 2008 as a standalone program.
- Wisconsin Lutheran joined the WIAA with the other private schools in 2000. The Vikings had qualified for the WIAA playoffs every year, until this season.
- Belleville was in a co-op with Albany for several years, last qualifying for the playoffs in 2007. The school last qualified for the playoffs as a standalone program in 1982.
- Milwaukee Career & Tech. Ed. is formerly known as Milwaukee Custer.
- Milwaukee Reagan was part of the Milwaukee Pulaski/Arts/Reagan co-op program when it previously qualified for the playoffs in 2011 to 2014.
- Potosi/Cassville is a first-year co-op program. Potosi has been in the playoffs as a standalone program every year since 2004. Cassville qualified as a standalone program in 2015 before canceling its varsity season in 2016.
