Football Alumni Round-up: October 25th

Many high school football standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. Alumni Update

Former Kimberly linebacker A.J. Klein returned to the Badger state last weekend as his New Orleans Saints defeated the host Green Bay Packers 26-17. Klein led the Saints in tackles with 6 in helping stifle the Packers offense.

While at Northland Pines, Austin Ramesh rushed for 5,939 yards placing him third all-time in state history in that category. Saturday, the Wisconsin fullback rushed for his fifth career touchdown in the Badger’s 42-13 win over Michigan. Tight end Zander Neuville (Waupaca) also contributed a receiving score.

UW-Oshkosh continues its tear through WIAC play as they beat UW-La Crosse 42-28. Brett Kasper (Two Rivers) threw for over 300 yards and 4 scores while Mitch Gerhartz (Hortonville) rushed for 172 yards and a score. Wide receiver Sam Mentkowski (Whitnall) had 163 receiving yards and 2 scores while Chad Redmer (Burlington) also hauled in 2 receiving scores. Defensively, Derrick Jennings Jr. (DeForest) had 6 tackles, half a sack, and 2 interceptions to earn WIAC Defensive Player of the Week.

On the other side of the ball, UW-La Crosse wideout Nick Holcomb (Germantown) had 15 catches for 190 yards and 2 touchdowns on his way to WIAC Offensive Player of the Week. He leads the WIAC with 12 receiving scores on the year.

In other WIAC play, Drew Pearson booted 3 field goals, including one from 53 yards, in UW-Stout’s 23-17 win over UW-Stevens Point. The Wausau West alumn’s performance earned him WIAC Special Teams Player of the Week. Elsewhere, Marcus Hudson (Delavan-Darian) had 9 catches for 173 yards and 2 scores in UW-Whitewater’s 20-7 win over UW-River Falls.

In Missouri Valley action, Dean Helt of Waunakee was named MVFC Offensive Lineman of the Week as he helped the Illinois State Redbirds rush for 331 yards in their 37-21 win over South Dakota.

Former Racine Horlick standout Rickey Neal had a monster day in Northern Iowa’s 19-14 win over Youngstown State. The linebacker recorded 6 tackles, 4 for loss, and 3.5 sacks on his way to earning MVFC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Former 2014 Wisconsin All-State selection Robert Windsor (Fond du Lac) recovered a fumble in Penn State’s 42-13 win over Michigan. That’s his second of the season.

Two in-state athletes won Northern Sun honors this past weekend. Firstly, Casey Bednarski (Oconomowoc) went 3 for 3 in field goal tries and 6 for 6 on extra points, while averaging 51 yards per punt for Minneosta State-Mankato in their 54-7 win over Southwest Minnesota State. This led Casey to being award Northern Sun’s Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Jakup Sinani was named Northern Sun’s Offensive Player of the Week after his monster game in Minnesota State-Moorhead’s 49-7 win over Minneosta Crookston. The Oak Creek graduate threw for 378 yards and accounted for 4 touchdowns. Hayden Swartz (Menomonie) was on the receiving end of 145 of those yards and a touchdown.

The Northern Illinois football team rushed for well over 300 yards in their 48-17 thrashing of Bowling Green. Offensive lineman Max Scharping (Green Bay Southwest), Jordan Steckler (Two Rivers), and Nathan Veloz (Oak Creek) led the way for the Husky runners. Tight end Shane Wimann (Wisconsin Dells) got in on the action as well recording his fifth receiving touchdown. On the other side of the ball, David Konowalski (Waukesha West) had 5 tackles, 1 sack, and 2 forced fumbles for Bowling Green.

St. Norbert College got contributions on both sides of the ball from in-state alumni in their 38-6 win over Lawrence University. Jadon Sackman (DeForest) rushed for 138 yards and 2 scores while Marty Franzkowiak (Port Washington) had a receiving score. Plymouth grad Samuel Stahling hauled in 2 more receiving scores, pushing his Midwest Conference leading total to 11. Defensively, Tyler Jensen (Waunakee) and Hunter Prokash (Algoma) each had an interception.

Lastly, former Waunakee graduate Casey Marksberry saw his first limited action at quarterback in Colorado’s 28-0 loss to Washington State. He threw it three times for 20 yards.
