Many high school football standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 4 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Alumni Update

Iowa quarterback Nathan Stanley is having a phenomenal sophomore season, and it shows in how often he has been mentioned in the Round-up in weeks past. Well this past weekend, the Menomonie graduate put together one of his best performances yet. He threw for 226 yards and 5 touchdowns in Iowa’s dominating 55-24 upset victory of sixth ranked Ohio State. Fellow back-mate Toren Young (Monona Grove) also recorded his first career rushing touchdown in the rout.

The WIAC recognized Kimberly alumn Luke Winnen as this week’s Defensive Player of the Week. Winnen had 7 tackles and an interception returned for a score in UW-La Crosse’s 21-7 win over UW-Stout. Also, Ryan Weber (Holmen), Colton Nieman (Wisconsin Rapids), and Peter Kissling (Oregon) recorded an interception each.

In UW-Whitewater’s 17-16 victory over UW-Platteville, the Warhawks got sacks from Cal Durni (Brookfield East), Alex Zacharia (Stoughton), Dalton Heckel (Wilmot), David O’Gorman (Watertown) and WIAC leading sacker Harry Henschler (Janesville Craig).

Elsewhere in the WIAC, #3 UW-Oshkosh continued its dominating season, throttling UW-Eau Claire 42-7. The Tritons were again led on offense by Brett Kasper of Two Rivers. The quarterback threw for 275 yards and 3 scores; 141 of those yards along with a score went to Sam Mentkowski (Whitnall). Chad Walton (Franklin), Mitch Gerhartz (Hortonville), J.P. Peerenboom (Kimberly), and Riley Kallas (Winneconne) all added at least one touchdown for the Triton offense.

Former Racine Horlick standout Rickey Neal continues his tear defensively for Northern Iowa. The linebacker recorded 7 tackles, 1 sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in the Panther’s 34-29 win over South Dakota. On the other side of the ball, Nathan Schultz (Arrowhead) had 6 tackles and 2 sacks, while tight end Josh Hale (Antigo) had 6 catches for 151 yards and a touchdown for South Dakota.

The year of the fullback continues at UW-Madison, as Bay Port graduate Alec Ingold recorded 3 touchdowns in the Badger’s 45-17 win over Indiana. Ingold and fellow fullback Austin Ramesh (Northland Pines) have combined for 6 scores this season. Defensively, Joe Ferguson (Madison Memorial) continued to take advantage of his increased playing time, hauling in 2 interceptions and recovering a fumble forced by linebacker Tyler Johnson (Menasha).

Speaking of expanded playing time, Wisconsin Lutheran graduate Chris Garrett continues to take full advantage of his. He racked up 9 tackles, 3 sacks, and an incredible 3 forced fumbles in Concordia- St. Paul’s 28-13 loss to Augustana. His performance merited him Northern Sun Defensive Player of the Week.

A couple of wide receivers had solid days in Northern Sun action this past weekend. Jason Balts (Barron) hauled in 5 catches for 132 yards and 2 scores in Minnesota Duluth’s 54-6 win over Minnesota Crookston. Minnesota State Mankato wide receiver Ty Dennis (Burlington) had 6 catches for 78 yards and a touchdown in the teams’ 48-27 win over Wayne State.

Former Wisconsin Badger and Wisconsin Rapids graduate Vince Biegel finally got his first action in the NFL after spending the early part of the season sidelined with an injury. The homegrown Green Bay Packer linebacker had 3 tackles in their 30-17 loss to the Detroit Lions.

Samuel Stahling is absolutely tearing the Midwest Football Conference up this year. The Plymouth graduate had 3 catches for 184 yards and 3 scores, while only playing in the first half, in St. Norbert College’s 47-7 win over Beloit College this past weekend. That performance earned Stahling Midwest Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week. This is Stahling’s 6th multi-touchdown game of the year and he now has 16 touchdowns on the year, which is tied for the Division 3 lead. Other in-state athletes, Braydon Van Ess (Sheboygan Christian), Jadon Sackman (DeForest), Ben Styczynski (Bay Port), and Marty Franzkowiak (Port Washington) all had a touchdown offensively.
