Bangor's Caleb Miedema hauls in a leaping interception

Something had to give in a battle of dominant, unbeaten teams in the Division 7 state title game, and Bangor made sure it wasn't them in pulling away for a 37-14 victory. The win gives Bangor its second state title in the past three years, joining their 2015 championship.

The Cardinals jumped out early, as Luke Reader scored on a 57-yard touchdown run on the game's second play from scrimmage. After Adam Tallman picked off a Black Hawk halfback option pass two plays later, Bangor would score quickly once again as Carter Horstman took a handoff 52 yards to the house for an 16-0 lead.

Black Hawk would answer, as Michael Flanagan snuck in from a yard out to pull the Warriors within 16-8 early in the first quarter.

Despite both teams getting into the opposing red zone, a blocked field goal by Bangor and an interception in the end zone for Black Hawk resulted in no second quarter points.

Black Hawk scored on its opening drive to pull within 16-14 following a failed two-point conversion, but it was as close as the Warriors would get the rest of the way. Bangor answered with a scoring drive of its own, and tacked on two more fourth quarter touchdowns to pull away.

Black Hawk was effective running the ball, but turned to the air more than normal, and it didn't pay off, as the team was picked off a total of three times by the Bangor defense.

Carter Horstman was all over the field for Bangor, recording 17 tackles on defense while rushing for 144 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 11 carries. Luke Reader added 185 yards and a score, as the Cardinals racked up 423 yards on the ground.

Black Hawk was effective running the ball as well, finishing with 179, as the 602 combined rushing yards set a new Division 7 state finals record.

Brody Milz led Black Hawk with 117 yards on the ground, with 20 tackles on defense as well.
