Each week WSN will take a look at the happenings in the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference, which includes many of the two-year campuses in the UW system. A look back at the big performances and news from the week before, a look ahead to some of the big games coming up, plus a Player of the Week will be featured.

Looking Back

It is a great time of the year, as the 2017-18 basketball season is underway, and that includes the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference men's hoops teams. The season is still young, but already several teams and players are off to excellent starts.

UW-Washington is 3-0 to start the campaign, averaging 94 points per game. The Wildcats opened the season with a 97-65 victory over UW-Richland on Veteran's Day, as Adrian Huerta led four players in double figures with 21 points. Balanced scoring has been key for the Wildcats, as Huerta is averaging a team-best 18 points per game, shooting 61% from the field so far. Three other players are averaging double figures as well, including AJ Barnes, who leads the team with nearly 8 rebounds per game.

UW-Sheboygan and head coach William Greenwood II are off to a 2-0 start this season with victory over Bryant and Stratton JV and Silver Lake College. "Alex Antonie, a 6-8 sophomore from Sheboygan Falls, has been absolutely dominant with 19 points and 9 rebounds versus Bryant and Stratton and 26 points and 14 rebounds against Silver Lake College," Greenwood said.

UW-Manitowoc has lost a couple tight games against Silver Lake College and the Marian JV, but Two Rivers product Rudy Montoya has been outstanding, averaging a WCC-best 26.5 points per game thus far.

UW-Rock's Jacob Hanus is the only player to hit the 30-point mark in the early portion of the season, scoring 30 in a 99-71 win at UW-Marshfield as the Rattlers are 2-0.

Looking Ahead

UW-Sheboygan will travel north to the U.P. to take part in the Gogebic CC Lindquist Classic this holiday weekend. The Wombats will face host Gogebic Community College on Saturday before taking on Bay College on Sunday. The team has a quick turnaround with a game against the Concordia JV on Monday.

UW-Richland has struggled to a 0-4 start, but the Roadrunners have a chance to build some early season momentum with games against Fond du Lac and Rock early next week.

Next Wednesday night is a busy night in the league with four games, including UW-Fond du Lac at UW-Waukesha. The Cougars of Waukesha have faced a tough early schedule and are just 1-3, but head coach Adam Ligocki's crew are well-prepared as they enter WCC-Eastern Division play.

WCC Men's Basketball Player of the Week: Alex Antonie, UW-Sheboygan

The Wombats are 2-0 this year, and 6-8 sophomore Alex Antonie is a big reason for the early success. One of three returning starters for head coach William Greenwood II, Antonie is coming off a freshman season that saw him average 12 points and 7 rebounds per game. He's upped the ante considerably this season and is looking like one of the best teams in the WCC. Antonie averaged 22.5 points, 14 rebounds, and 3 blocks per game as the team scored close wins over the Bryant and Stratton JV squad and Silver Lake College in the last few days.
