The WSN15 series will celebrate the 15th Anniversary of WisSports.net by looking back at the top players, teams, and moments of the past 15 years (2003-2017).

We begin our WSN15 series with the Top 15 Moments of the WSN Era.

Top 15 Moments: #15 - Winneconne becomes most unlikely state champ

Each year in the WIAA playoffs it seems a team comes seemingly out of nowhere with several losses on their regular season record to make a deep playoff run. The 2013 Division 4 state title game featured not one, but two such programs.

Winneconne finished 4-5 overall during the regular season, sneaking into the playoffs with a 4-4 conference record to earn a #6 seed. Platteville was 5-4 overall and 4-4 in the SWC, but in a weak grouping, received a three-seed in the playoffs.

The teams got hot at the right time and won some close games in the quarterfinals and semifinals to advance to Madison, however.

Their eight combined losses entering the championship game were the most in WIAA state history.

Platteville jumped out first, scoring on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Logan Butson to Derek Schambow. However, Winneconne scored 28 unanswered points and would finished with a 28-14 win, as Mitchell Markert carried the ball 31 times for 120 yards and a touchdown, with Mitchel Fenrich passing for 132 yards and a score.

There have been some calls to reduce the size of the playoff field and eliminate a week of the postseason, going down to 112 playoff teams, but this game is a prime example of why that isn't a good idea, as under such a proposal, neither team would have made the playoffs, let alone had a chance to get to Camp Randall.
