We begin our WSN15 series with the Top 15 Moments of the WSN Era.

Top 15 Moments: #9 - Back-to-back overtime thrillers in 2011 Division 4 and 5 games

We've seen our share of excitement at the state finals, including many games that have or will show up on this list. For back-to-back games, nothing can match the two straight overtime contests to close out the Thursday of the 2011 championships.

We had a couple snoozers to begin, as Greenwood/Granton hammered Seneca 40-0 in Division 7 to open things, while Saint Mary's Springs shut out Shiocton 24-0 for the Division 6 title.

Things changed quickly in the much-anticipated unbeaten showdown between Colby and Lancaster in the Division 5 championship. Colby scored 13 points in less than five minutes of the first quarter, though Lancaster answered quickly.

Colby would go up 23-7 early in the second quarter, but Lancaster came blazing back, scoring two touchdowns on Troy Baker runs in a span of less than two-and-a-half minutes. Colby got another touchdown, but Lancaster would tack one more of its own on a Baker five-yard run with just 11 seconds remaining before halftime, as Colby went to the break leading 30-27.

The teams were held scoreless in the third, but Lancaster took its first lead of the game when Trae Mezera scored on a 21-yard run early in the fourth. Colby answered to go up 37-34, but Hunter Budack booted a 34-yard field goal with a little over four minutes remaining to tie it up at 37.

Colby had a chance to win it late, but Kile Jerrett blocked a 19-yard Michael Knetter field goal attempt with 36 seconds left.

Lancaster got the ball first in overtime, scoring on a 25-yard Mezera touchdown run. However, Tyler Meyer blocked the extra point attempt, which would prove to be huge.

On Colby's first play of the extra period, Aaron Koernet hit Meyer for a 25-yard touchdown, and Knetter kicked the game-winning extra point to lift Colby to a 44-43 victory.

Wrightstown and Somerset didn't exactly keep that excitement going in the first half of the Division 4 state title game that followed. The teams combined for just 120 yards before halftime with four turnovers as neither team was able to get on the board.

Each team was able to push across a score in the third quarter, and Somerset would take a 20-12 lead on Wrightstown with 2:03 minutes left in the game.

Wrightstown wasn't done, though, putting together a 10-play, 52-yard drive that was capped when Jordan Johnson found Cody Lukes for a four-yard touchdown with just 23 seconds remaining. Johnson would run for the game-tying two-point conversion, sending the game to overtime.

Both teams were empty on their first possessions in overtime, but Jackson Fox went in from 23-yard out for Wrightstown on its second possession, as Johnson added the two-point run. Somerset answered with a touchdown of its own, but the two-point conversion run by Tyler Ledbeter was stopped, handing Wrightstown the Division 4 state title, 28-26 in double overtime.

The two straight overtime games were an outstanding treat for fans at the state championships in 2011.
