Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 6 p.m. on Sundays.

Alumni Update

As basketball season is now in full swing and the college football looks ahead to the bowls, we will be highlighting Wisconsin born basketball players weekly in our basketball alumni round-up. As this is the first one of the season, and the season is a month old, we will be giving briefs of some athletes through this time period.

It feels only fitting to lead the first round-up off with the most tenured player in the NBA from the Badger state. Wauwatosa East graduate Devin Harris is in his 13th NBA season and through the first few weeks, is averaging 8.8 points per game for the Dallas Mavericks. Teammate, and Madison Memorial alumn, Wes Matthews is averaging 10.8 points and 3.3 assists per game.

Another Madison Memorial standout, Darral Willis Jr. is a key piece to the 6th ranked Wichita State Shockers. Willis is averaging 11.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. He’s had 2 double doubles through the first 7 games.

UW-Milwaukee and Marquette are getting major contributions from in-state athletes thus far this season. Milwaukee’s Bryce Nze (Arrowhead) and Brett Prahl (East Troy) are both averaging over 10 points and 6 rebounds a game for the Panthers. Steven Point grad Sam Hauser is a do everything forward for Marquette, averaging 12.4 points and 6 rebounds a game. He had a career high 30 points against Eastern Illinois earlier in the year.

Just like with football, the Northern Sun Conference has many Badger state kids on rosters. Harrison Cleary of Oak Creek is averaging over 23 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists per game for Minnesota Crookston. He was named the Northern Sun Player of the Week in week 2 of the season.

Two Northern Sun teams have 3 different players scoring in the double digits for their programs. Bemidji State is led by Jai’Vionne Green (Wauwatosa East) Lucas Wendt (Shoreland Lutheran) and Logan Bader (Unity). Logan Rohrscheib (Regis), Brandon Myer (Superior), and Trevor Entwisle (Neenah) all score in double digits for Minnesota Duluth.

The NBA G-League is a place for young pros to develop and gain experience on their route to hopefully the NBA. Three players are having outstanding starts to the season here. Jamil Wilson (Racine Horlick) is averaging 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists for the Agua Caliente Clippers. Diamond Stone (Dominican) has totaled 16.7 points and 6 rebounds per game for the Windy City Bulls. Lastly, Vander Blue (Madison Memorial) has averaged 18.8 points per game and 6.6 assists for the South Bay Lakers.

Two former Germantown teammates are having successful seasons at 2 different levels so far this season. Jon Averkamp is averaging over 20 points and 7 rebounds a game for division 2 St. Cloud State. His high school teammate, Lamonte Bearden is averaging 12.5 points and 3.8 assists for Western Kentucky. Bearden scored his career high 24 points in the season opener against Missouri State.

The Missouri Valley Conference always has in-state athletes throughout and this year is no different. Drake is led by the conference’s leading scorer Reed Timmer. The New Berlin Eisenhower grad is averaging 22.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists for Drake. Teammate Nick McGlynn (Stoughton) is also averaging 13.3 points and 7.4 rebounds for the Bulldogs as well.

Da’Rion King has been a double-double machine thus far for East Central University. The Racine Case graduate has 4 double-doubles in 5 games. He is averaging double digit points and rebounds on the young season.

Kyle Monroe is the highest scorer of any in-state recruit at the division 2 and up level early on in the season. The Ashwaubenon graduate is averaging 25.9 points, along with 8.3 rebounds for division 2 Michigan Tech. He has had three 30 or more point games to this point.
