Cumberland's Kobe Berghammer and Grantsburg's John Chenal were First Team All-State selections in football this fall, but both are excellent basketball players as well. They went toe-to-toe on the hardwood Tuesday night to the delight of those in attendance at Grantsburg.
With his team trailing by two points, Berghammer swished home a fallaway three-pointer with 1.5 seconds remaining to put Cumberland on top, much to the delight of the Beavers' squad.
It wasn't over yet, however. After a timeout, Grantsburg had one more chance. Inbounding under their own basket, the Pirates threw a long baseball pass that Chenal caught between four defenders at the opposite free throw line. He caught, turned, and fired a shot that banked through at the buzzer to lift Grantsburg to a 58-57 victory.
Chenal, a Badgers preferred walk-on football commit, finished with 25 points.
This isn't the first time these schools and players have duked it out this year. In Week 1 of the high school football season, Grantsburg beat Cumberland 72-52, as Berghammer threw for 531 yards and 7 touchdowns, while Chenal rushed for 435 yards and 6 touchdowns.
