Waukesha and Marathon continue early-season WCC women's hoops dominance

Each week WSN will take a look at the happenings in the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference, which includes many of the two-year campuses in the UW system. A look back at the big performances and news from the week before, a look ahead to some of the big games coming up, plus a Player of the Week will be featured.

Looking Back

The WCC women's hoops season is slowly but surely getting ramped up.

Waukesha continued its strong start with a pair of close victories in the last week. On Wednesday, the Cougars hosted UW-Fond du Lac. While Waukesha led by 13 at halftime, Fond du Lac would rally to make it a game in the second half before the host Cougars won 78-71. Hannah Bricco (Mukwonago) scored a team-high 30 points with 16 rebounds, as Kailey Kennow (Kenosha Indian Trails) also had a double-double with 12 and 10.

On Saturday, Waukesha traveled to Marinette, scoring a hard-fought 72-64 victory. Justice Hawkins (Wauwatosa West) led the team with 22 points, though Bricco would post another double-double with 16 and 10.

UW-Marathon got back into action last Wednesday, and it was another blowout victory for the Huskies. Marathon would go on the road to defeat Fox Valley Tech 117-13, marking the third-straight 100-point performance for the Huskies. Morgan Rachu (Marathon HS) had another big game, pouring in 47 points, while fellow Marathon High School grad Jayci Blume added 27.

Looking Ahead

UW-Fond du Lac has been one of the top teams in the early-going this season, and the Falcons get another test against Marinette tonight. Fondy du Lac is looking for its third straight victory, coming off dominating wins over Washington and Fox Valley. Tiffani Anderson (Campbellsport) and Cassidy Williams (Winnebago Lutheran) each average 14.3 points per game for the Falcons. Sophomore forward Tori Wangerin is the leader of the Buccaneers fo Marinette, averaging 23 points and 22 rebounds per game in the early portion of the season.

After tonight's game, Marinette will travel to Washington on Saturday, while Fond du Lac heads to Bay College. 

WCC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hannah Bricco, UW-Waukesha

UW-Waukesha has won five straight games, including a pair of close contests in the last week. Last Wednesday, sophomore guard Hannah Bricco scored 30 points and pulled down 16 rebounds as the Cougars knocked off Fond du Lac 78-71. Saturday, the Cougars welcomed in Marinette. It was another close one, as Waukesha prevailed 72-64 behind 16 points and 10 rebounds from Bricco.
