Each week WSN will take a look at the happenings in the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference, which includes many of the two-year campuses in the UW system. A look back at the big performances and news from the week before, a look ahead to some of the big games coming up, plus a Player of the Week will be featured.

Looking Back

Last Wednesday, December 6th, was separation time in the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference, as the only two unbeaten conference teams in each division squared off.

In the West, UW-Rock opened up a 50-36 halftime lead and cruised home for an 89-78 victory over UW-Baraboo. No players scored 20 points for Rock, but seven different players scored at least eight points in the victory, led by 19 from David Harper (Janesville Parker). Baraboo would drop a game to UW-Marathon on Monday, as the Fighting Spirts are now two games back in the standings, looking up at Rock and UW-Marathon.

UW-Washington's historic season continued, as the Wildcats knocked off UW-Fox Valley last Wednesday begin a game-high 21 points from Ahmad Pender, Jr., who connected on all seven of his free throws and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.

Washington took on defending conference champion UW-Waukesha last night, and it was one of the top games of the year in the WCC. The lead went back and forth, but Washington prevailed 78-76 thanks to a game-winning three-pointer from J Broxton Thomas in the final minute. Washington has never won a men's basketball conference championship, but the Wildcats are now two games up in the East Division standings.

Looking Ahead

The WCC schedule thins considerably in the coming weeks as schools finish the first semester and head to the holiday break. Washington at the Ripon College JV squad this Friday is the only game until a few teams get underway on December 30th.

As a result, we'll take a brief hiatus on the weekly WCC update article until Wednesday, January 3rd.

WCC Men's Basketball Player of the Week: J Broxton Thomas, UW-Washington

Washington moved to 9-0 overall and 7-0 in conference action on Wednesday night with a 78-76 win over UW-Waukesha, the team that defeated the Wildcats in last year's WCC Championship game. J Broxton Thomas hit a three-pointer with under a minute to go to give Washington the victory. Thomas also scored 17 points in a win over Marinette on Saturday, making five-of-seven three-point attempts.
