Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 6 p.m. on Mondays.

Alumni Update

Last week, three Badger State alumni surpassed the 1,000 career point mark in college. We kick this week off with yet another player surpassing that mark.

Whitefish Bay graduate Joe Sherburne has been playing extremely well in his three years at UMBC and that paid off this past Sunday in the team’s 68-60 win over Albany. Sherburne scored 14 points and in doing so, eclipsed the 1,000 point mark in his career.

Malcolm Mabry has been nothing but a double-double machine for McKendree University this season and this past week was no different. The Milwaukee South grad had 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists in an 88-84 victory over Missouri St. Louis on Thursday. He followed that up with an 11 point, 14 rebound performance in an 86-77 loss to Maryville on Saturday. That was Mabry’s eight and ninth double-doubles of the season.

Both UW-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay have in-state athletes throughout their rosters and get great contributions from them. Sandy Cohen III (Seymour) had 25 points and 7 rebounds in Green Bay’s 83-75 loss to UIC on Friday. Cohen has scored 20 plus points in a third of the games he’s played this season. For UW-Milwaukee, Brett Prahl (East Troy) had 22 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks, while teammate Bryce Nze (Arrowhead) had 9 points, 17 rebounds, and 4 blocks in Milwaukee’s 76-71 loss to IUPUI on Friday. Prahl ranks first and Nze fourth in the Horizon League in field goal percentage, while both are in the top five in blocks per game.

The WIAC had plenty of intrigue in its last week of play, as first place was up for grabs between UW-Platteville and UW-Stevens Point.

UW-Stevens Point needed to win out and it would have won a share of the regular season championship. Saturday, George Diekelman and UW-Eau Claire had different thoughts. Diekelman, a Stevens Point High School grad had 13 points, including a game winning layup with 7 seconds left to seal the 55-54 win for Eau Claire. That and his 20 point performance against UW-River Falls on Wednesday, earned Diekelman WIAC Player of the Week honors.

Germantown High School alumn Jake Showalter led UW-Platteville with 16 points in their 70-66 Wednesday night victory over UW-Whitewater. With Stevens Point’s loss Saturday, all Platteville had to do was beat River Falls on Saturday. Behind Carter Voelker (Kiel) and Matt Oesterich’s (Marshfield) combined 33 points, they did just that beating River Falls 81-69 en route to a regular season WIAC Championship.

Two Division 1 players who have been huge contributors for their schools put up season high this past week.

Darral Willis Jr. (Madison Memorial) has been a key piece for the 13th ranked Wichita State Shockers. Last Thursday, Willis Jr. had a season high 24 points in 23 minutes in the Shocker’s 93-86 win over Temple. He shot 9 of 11 from the field.

Reed Timmer has scored in bunches for Drake this season. The New Berlin Eisenhower product put up a season high 39 points in Drake’s 90-76 win over Indiana State on Wednesday. He hit 8 three pointers while also dishing out 4 assists.

Four different Division 2 players put up double-doubles this past week for their respective teams. Firstly, Chanlder Diekvoss (West De Pere) had 19 points and 11 rebounds in Lindenwood’s 56-52 victory over Central Missouri on Saturday. Teammate Brad Newman (Brookfield Central) had the game clinching free throws late in the game.

Logan Bader of Unity High School had 13 points and 11 rebounds in Bemidji State’s 67-59 win over Mary University on Friday. That was Bader’s third double-double of the season.

Kyle Monroe yet again played extremely well in two Michigan Tech losses this past week. The Ashwaubenon grad had back to back 30 point, 10 rebound games while teammate Isaac Appleby (Eau Claire Memorial) also had a double-double in one of those games.

Two different freshman had stellar games for their Division 1 programs. Jordan Poole (Milwaukee King) had 15 points in 19 minutes to help Michigan upset 8th ranked Ohio State 74-62 on Saturday. Chris Knight (Madison Memorial) had a career high 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks to lead Dartmouth to a 66-63 win over Brown on Saturday.

Tyler Semenas went and had himself a week for Ripon College. The Laconia alum had 24 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 3 steals in Ripon’s 88-62 win over Lawrence on Tuesday. He followed it up with a 28 point, 5 rebound, 6 steal, and 2 block performance in a 79-65 win over Knox College on Saturday. He shot 21 of 32 from the field in those two games. For that, he earned Midwest Player of the Week honors.

Lastly, and surely not least, Riley LaChance took over in two games for Vanderbilt last week. He had 16 points in Vanderbilt’s 81-80 victory over Mississippi State on Wednesday. What’s more, he knocked in the game-winning three pointer with .5 seconds on the clock. He then led a double-digit comeback against Florida Saturday. He scored 21 points and dished out 5 assists in the 71-68 victory.
