I could not agree with you more. I tend to believe that special teams is what seperate good teams from being great teams, as we saw last night. I don't see too many great teams that don't attempt a single field goal all season. I am not saying that was the case with the game last night. I just don't think a lot of teams put a huge emphasis on special teams. The only time most of us notice it is when it costs a team a game.

Seems to be an awful lot of effort being put into turning the Badger kicker into a goat. I think the problem lies somewhere else. Far too many coaches -- especially those without a lot of playoff success in their background -- treat kicking as a who-cares afterthought. Then, when it comes to bite them in the butt in the playoffs, people feel free blame the kicker or the line.

If you want to have a successful program, you have to execute kicks with accuracy and consistency. Coaches say cliches like "it's a third of the game" but often fail to follow through on their own convictions.

If I'm the Badger coach (or one of the dozens of others who have lost playoff games due to missed kicks in the last 10-20 years), I need to start RIGHT NOW planning how to develop top-notch kicking and PAT blocking/snapping for next year. Somebody should be spending all spring and summer mastering the mechanics so that it becomes second nature. The time to think about "what can we do about our weak kicking game" is NOT the second half of the playoff game, it's the first week of the off-season.

I will agree with you that he has made a lot of extra points this year, but he has also missed a lot. I believe I counted 7 misses. Lastly, Stilp has not made or attempted one field goal this year. I think that says something.

I am sorry about that guys, that came out wrong. I meant it to be the kicking game as a whole. Yes, both kicks were blocked due to poor blocking up front. I did however get to talk to one of the parents whose son is the Safety for Badger and he informed me that there kicker has been poor all season. The guy told me that they have gone for it many times on 4th down inside the 20 due to the kicker having a weak leg. When Badger went for the extra point on there last touchdown several parents mentioned that they should have gone for 2. Lastly when you have a 6''7 player on the opposite side of the ball you have to narrow your splits so he can't get big pressure. Badger must have had 2 foot splits on that last extra point.

I heard the same thing from the Badger students I was by, however, box scores will show that Nick Stilp made a lot of XPs this year. Simply, it comes down to failed execution by others, not the kicker himself.

You can't pin that loss on the kicker, on the first missed extra point if you watched the snap rolled to the holder and the kicker had to rush it once the ball was on the tee. and the extra point that got blocked was kicked a little low but 3 Franklin defensive linemen blew through the badger line. but yes, badgers team is full of thugs who have heart, good season

The first kick was the result of a bad snap, but Franklin also deflected it which caused the miss...

I really have to take my hat off to Badger. I was at the game last night and I was thoroughly impressed with there determination and discipline. If Badger had a better kicker we might not be congratulating them on a great season. Badger missed two extra points, one with about 3 min to play. Franklin on the other hand was bigger, stronger, and faster. Before the game started I felt based on schedule and team strength that Franklin was going to blow Badger out. I was sadly mistaken. I am sure Franklin fans will tell you that if not for the dropped passes Franklin would have opened this game wide open. After going to so many games this year I continually find myself wrongfully discounting teams before the game even starts. I will have to say that after the last two weeks of playoff games I have learned my lesson. Anything can happen when a team has the heart of a champion. Congrats to Badger on a great season!

Both kicks were blocked, hardly his fault, especially the second one which was practically taken off his foot.

Merrill played a great game, good luck to the Bluejays next week against Kimberly or Pulaski. I hope Coach T can take them all the way.

It was bad enough not having Danczak and Johnson in the lineup, but starting FB Josh Lutz was out with the flu. The Tigers bench was not deep enough to make up for the loss of these three great playmakers. Arneson and whoever caught that last TD pass made big plays when needed most.

Coach T had a great game plan and his offensive and defensive lines outplayed the Tiger lines. Sad ending to a great season, but of course only seven teams come away with a Gold Ball.

Actually it was Arneson that made the TD catch too!

Couldn't of said it better myself Mike. Merrill played a great football game tonight and earned there spot in the semifinals. Marshfield had a very good season and they should hold there heads high. There are things that happen in a season you can't control, you just have to made due with the cards that your dealt. Great season for the Tigers and good luck to the Blue Jays next friday and after. And Welcome back to the WVC next year if the conference play sticks around next year. I'm sure Marshfield will be waiting for you.

Ripon's got an explosive RB in Connor Hanson, Big Foot's got an explosive RB in Mike Walker. The difference tonight was that Hanson was never able to get the big run. he had plenty of 10 yard runs but no game changing 50 yarders. Meanwhile all three Big Foot touchdowns came after incredible plays by Walker, including a couple Houdini acts. Walker made some incredible cuts on the FieldTurf.

I'm proud of these boys from Merrill, I remember when i was on varsity years back, god I'm getting old, but these some of these kids would show up with there dads( some of our coaches) to practice and would throw us passes and etc. I'm sad I wasn't able to be at the game. Coach T is a great guy and I'm so glad to watch this success come to him and the rest of the team. I'm one proud Merrill Alum tonight
