Visits set for Morris, Peterson and Derricks

by Marlin Lee, 1/6/2009

-Ranked as the No. 28 overall prospect and No. 1 quarterback in the most recent edition of the WisFootball.net class of 2009 player rankings, Racine Horlick quarterback Steve Morris (6-0, 184) had about as good of a senior season as any player could hope to have.

One of the state's most electrifying and dynamic offensive players during the 2008 season, Morris completed 244 of 385 passes for 2,827 yards and 28 touchdowns and rushed 225 times for 1,352 yards and 17 touchdowns. His long list of accolades included WFCA first-team all-state, WFCA Offensive Player of the Year, Associated Press unanimous first-team all-state, WFCA all-region, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel first-team all-area, Racine Journal Times first-team all-Racine County, first-team all-conference and Southeast Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Year.

Not surprisingly, that type of season has helped draw recruiting interest from a number of Division I-FBS, Division I-FCS and Division II schools.

I'm taking visits to Southwest Baptist and Concordia-St. Paul. Those are planned,” Morris said. “I also plan on going to Southern Illinois, St. Cloud and Oregon.”

While he doesn't have any scholarship offers at this time, Morris said most of the schools have indicated that they will talk about the financial aspect of things during his visits.

A star quarterback in high school, some have speculated if Morris might be better suited to play a different position at the college level giving him the “athlete” label. But according to Morris, a position change may not necessarily be in his future.

I'm getting recruited primarily as a quarterback, but with St. Cloud, there's talk of playing as an athlete, maybe at more than one position.”

No matter which position he ends up at, Morris definitely has the talent to help out a football program in one fashion or another.

A three-year starter, Morris finished his varsity career completing 424 of 762 passes for 4,762 yards and 42 touchdowns. He also rushed 434 times for 2,015 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Morris reported a 4.53-second 40-yard dash, 225-pound bench press max and 405-pound squat max.

-Cedar Grove-Belgium tight end/linebacker Josh Peterson (6-4, 215) has some good news of the preferred walk-on variety.

I have a walk-on (invite) to Western Michigan,” Peterson told WisFootball.net on Monday. “I missed the scholarship by one guy who also had an offer to Michigan State but committed to WMU quickly.

South Dakota State also gave me a walk-on assuming that the recruits ahead of me don't accept the scholarship,” Peterson said.

WMU and SDSU aren't the only schools showing an interest in WisFootball.net's No. 26 overall prospect and No. 1 tight end in the class of 2009 though.

Peterson said he has visits scheduled with Michigan Tech, Northern Michigan, Southwest Minnesota State, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Stout.

A standout on both offense and defense, Peterson received WFCA honorable-mention all-state, Associated Press honorable-mention all-state, WFCA all-region and first-team all-conference honors as a linebacker. He was also named Sheboygan Press first-team all-area and first-team all-conference at tight end.

Peterson was selected to play in the WFCA Division 4-7 All-Star Game.

-Dana Derricks (6-1, 185) did a little bit of everything for Plum City High School this season. He played quarterback, running back, defensive back, outside linebacker and returned punts. He even earned Eau Claire Leader-Telegram honorable-mention all-area and first-team all-conference linebacker and second-team all-conference receiver honors.

Now Derricks is hearing from a number of colleges and universities including Minnesota-Crookston, UW-Stout, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Eau Claire and Wartburg College.

I'm being recruited not for one position as most kids are,” Derricks said. “I was a two-way player, as well as special teams, and am being recruited for defense from some schools and offense from others. Also, special teams (punt returns) from all of them.”

Of the list of suitors, it seems the strongest interest has come from UW-River Falls, UW-Stout, Wartburg and Minnesota-Crookston with each of the schools making contact via the telephone numerous times and visiting Plum City High School.

UM-Crookston and Wartburg College are the early favorites, but I'm very open to any other offers,” Derricks explained. “I have an official visit to UM-Crookston on the 17th and an official visit to Wartburg on the 24th.”

The younger brother of UW-River Falls linebacker Dominic Derricks, Dana Derricks reported a 4.66-second 40-yard dash, 250-pound bench press and 360-pound squat.

Wynn commits, official visits set for Jorgensen

by Marlin Lee, 1/2/2009

-A quick look at the University of Dubuque's football roster reveals a couple of things...first, the overwhelming number of players from the states of Florida (38) and California (7), and second, the severe lack of players from the state of Wisconsin (6).

Definitely an oddity given the fact that UD is a Division III school that doesn't offer athletic scholarships and is located in the heart of the Midwest just over a bridge from the state of Wisconsin.

But this odd roster makeup could be coming to an end thanks to the hiring of Minnesota State-Mankato offensive coordinator and former UW-Whitewater offensive coordinator Stan Zweifel.

While already familiar with recruiting in Wisconsin, Zweifel appears to be trying to make even more roads into the Badger State, and more specifically the Milwaukee area, with the hiring of Milwaukee Bay View head coach Gary Griffin as UD's special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach.

It hasn't taken long for this hiring to pay off either as UD has already secured a commitment from one of Griffin's former Bay View players in running back Darril Wynn (6-0, 175).

“Before I was confused, but then I felt this was the perfect opportunity for me,” said Wynn who had also drawn interest from Winona State and Minnesota-Moorhead.

“I want to go somewhere that I would enjoy,” he added.

A fixture at Bay View since his sophomore season, Wynn had 48 carries for 314 yards and seven touchdowns in 2006, 80 carries for 617 yards and five touchdowns in 2007, and 144 carries for 1,370 yards and 23 touchdowns as a senior this season.

Overshadowed by all-state running back Lenier Johnson as a sophomore and junior, Wynn did manage to garner second-team all-conference honors as a junior and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel honorable-mention all-area and first-team all-conference laurels as a senior.

-De Pere quarterback Brent Jorgensen (6-2, 180) has all five of his official visits set up and scheduled to begin next week. The list of stops includes Minnesota-Duluth, St. Cloud State, North Dakota, Southern Illinois and North Dakota State.

“I have a high interest in all five of the schools
