Waunakee's Irwin commits to UW

Waunakee offensive lineman/defensive end Jake Irwin (6-4, 255) has received a scholarship offer from and verbally committed to coach Bret Bielema and the University of Wisconsin.

“I did verbally commit to UW today,” Irwin told WisFootball.net on Tuesday evening. “My coach called me last night around nine and said that he talked to the coaches at UW and they told him I didn’t need to go to anymore camps because I was all set with a scholarship. I called my parents and told them that right away, and then my football coach called me around eight this morning and gave me Coach Bielema's cell phone number and at 8:05 I called Coach Bielema. He asked if I had heard they were going to offer me. I said yes and committed right away.”

Irwin chose Wisconsin over interest from Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa State, Northern Illinois, Western Michigan, North Dakota State, Harvard, Princeton, Augustana and St. Cloud State

“The thing I like most about UW is the coaches,” Irwin explained. “I attended their first camp this summer and Coach Bielema, Coach (Bob) Bostad, Coach (Charles) Partridge and Coach (Paul) Chryst were all awesome guys. I’m really excited to be a part of this program now because I know the coaches can do great things for the players and the team.”

Irwin is the state's eighth known prospect to receive an offer from the Badgers and the fourth to verbally commit joining D.C. Everest linebacker Konrad Zagzebski (UW verbal), Madison East wide receiver Marquis Mason (UW verbal), Brookfield Central defensive tackle Bryce Gilbert (UW verbal), Whitefish Bay punter Will Hagerup, Kimberly defensive end Mike Hardy, Milwaukee Marquette defensive back Michael Trotter and Berlin offensive lineman Dallas Lewallen (expected to commit soon).

An honorable-mention all-conference selection as a sophomore in 2007, Irwin received first-team all-conference honors as a junior last season.
