Badgers offer in-state running back

Talk about a strong class, the state's class of 2010 now boasts 14 players with at least one Big Ten scholarship offer and 22 with at least one Division I-FBS or Division I-FCS offer to their name. What's even more amazing is those 22 players have amassed an eye-popping 90 known scholarship offers between them for an average of just over four scholarship offers per player.

One college in particular who has taken advantage of such a wide array of talent and depth is the University of Wisconsin. With nine known state prospects holding offers from the in-state institution, five of which have already verbally committed to the Badgers, coach Bret Bielema and staff are definitely making their presence known and setting up the proverbial fence around the state this year.

The Badgers' latest in-state recruiting endeavor – Brookfield Central running back Jeff Lewis (6-3, 200).

Ranked as the No. 14 overall prospect and No. 4 running back in the class of 2010, Lewis already listed scholarship offers from Indiana, Western Michigan, Illinois State, Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois, but the University of Wisconsin added their name to that list on Wednesday following a strong camp performance from Lewis.

“Wisconsin offered me at 10 a.m. this morning,” Lewis told WisFootball.net. “I went to their one-day camp and as the day went on they began to like my athletic ability and personality more and more. Coach Belema and (Bob) Bostad said they loved my work ethic and that my running style would fit in perfectly with their offense.”

No stranger to the recruiting process or garnering scholarship offers, Lewis said there was just something special about receiving an offer from the Badgers.

“I was the happiest I've ever been from receiving an offer,” he explained. “I yelled so loud when I called my dad. My interest level is extremely high for UW and I would say they're one of my top favorites.”

A second-team all-conference selection as a junior, Lewis finished the 2008 season with 81 carries for 538 yards and eight touchdowns.
