Checking in with some of the state's best from the class of 2010

-Is the wait over? Is this the year the drought ends? Will the state of Wisconsin finally see another prep quarterback sign a national letter of intent with a Division I-FBS school in 2010?

The answers to all of those questions is maybe.

Not since Hartford Union's Brian Brunner and the class of 2004 has the state seen a quarterback sign with a Division I-FBS university and not since Arrowhead's Tyler Donovan and the class of 2003 has the state seen a quarterback with any type of national ranking or exposure.

But all of that could soon change thanks to the state's class of 2010 and several intriguing prospects.

The state's leading passer in 2008, Oshkosh West's Trey Demler (6-1, 183) had a huge junior season completing 226 of 357 passing attempts for 3,051 yards and 19 touchdowns in route to earning Oshkosh Northwestern Offensive Player of the Year, Oshkosh Northwestern first-team all-area and second-team all-conference honors.

The odds on favorite to be ranked as the No. 1 quarterback in the state's class of 2010, Demler has used that extremely successful junior season to help draw plenty of early college recruiting interest.

“I'm currently receiving interest from Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, UCLA and North Dakota State. I've also received interest and film requests from Iowa, but nothing too recent,” Demler said. “Illinois and Wisconsin are definitely showing the most interest.”

The home state Badgers have already invited Demler to their annual Junior Day.

“I'd have to say Wisconsin is probably at the top of my list,” Demler said. “I've been a huge fan growing up, my family has season tickets so I've been to countless games down there. I love everything about Wisconsin football that you get from a 'fans perspective.' I'll know a lot more about the football program itself and the facilities after Junior Day.”

While UW appears to be the early leader, don't count out the Fighting Illini.

“Illinois is definitely near the top of my early favorites list. They invited me to all their home games this season. I went down to one against Minnesota and I loved it. Everything was really nice down there. Their facilities were all very impressive,” Demler explained.

Look for Demler to continue to receive plenty of college looks throughout the spring and summer and potentially head into his senior season with several scholarship offers to his name.

-Five Division I-FBS colleges are currently showing an interest in and sending letters to Edgar High School class of 2010 quarterback/defensive back Justin Sinz (6-4, 220).

Who's in that group of five? Wisconsin, Duke, UCLA, Minnesota and Alabama to be specific.

“I received a letter from Wisconsin today for their Junior Day March 1st and I plan on attending,” Sinz told WisFootball.net on Saturday.

One of the state's most decorated players from the class of 2010, Sinz earned WFCA honorable-mention all-state, WFCA all-region, WSAW NewsChannel 7 all-star, first-team all-conference and Marawood Conference Back of the Year honors at quarterback this past season after completing 119 of 185 passing attempts for 1,835 yards and 21 touchdowns.

He was also named WFCA honorable-mention all-state, WFCA all-region, WSAW NewsChannel 7 all-star and first-team all-conference as a defensive back.

Last, but not least, Sinz was named a first-team all-conference kicker.

A starter since his freshman season, Sinz has completed 275 of 482 passes for 4,180 yards and 45 touchdowns during his first three seasons under center for the Wildcats.

A multi-sport athlete, Sinz is listed on WisHoops.net's Juniors to Watch List and was a sectional qualifier in the 4x200 meter relay as a sophomore.

-Two of the state's top defensive play makers from the class of 2010, Milwaukee Marquette's Trotter twins, also known as linebacker Marcus Trotter (6-1, 220) and defensive back Michael Trotter (6-0, 200), are already drawing all sorts of college recruiting interest.

Named honorable-mention all-conference as a sophomore and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel honorable-mention all-area and first-team all-conference as a junior, Michael Trotter has garnered looks from Wisconsin, Michigan State, UCLA, Akron, Southern Illinois, Dartmouth and Harvard.

Likewise, brother Marcus Trotter has received interest from Wisconsin, Duke, Purdue, Akron, Southern Illinois, Dartmouth and Harvard. Marcus was a first-team all-conference selection as a junior.

Both brothers have received invitations to the University of Wisconsin's annual Junior Day.

“I plan to keep my interest with Wisconsin at an ultimate high, yet I am very interested in many other schools as well,” Marcus said. “Duke and Purdue said I would be part of their recruiting class of 2010. Duke specifically told me they wanted to recruit me as a scholarship athlete. Wisconsin is very interested in me, but I will only know where I will fit in terms of recruiting for Wisconsin after the Junior Day.”

Neither brother indicated any type of early leader in their recruiting process.

“So far, I have no early favorites,” Marcus said. “Each university is great in its own way.”

-Sun Prairie class of 2010 running back Sean Marshall (5-10, 215) has received his fair share of recruiting letters in recent weeks.

The list of schools who have sent mail as of late includes Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, UCLA, Alabama, Northern Illinois and Cincinnati.

Of that list, Marshall said Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin have shown the most interest.

It seems that amount of interest and contact has paid off for the Fighting Illini as Marshall listed Illinois as his early leader.

“Illinois has a great coaching staff. I like their style,” Marshall said.

A Capital Times honorable-mention all-area and second-team all-conference selection as a sophomore, Marshall rushed 131 times for 1,028 yards and six touchdowns in 2007.

Due to eligibility issues, Marshall missed most of his junior season in 2008.
