Tier I State Tournament: Team Wisconsin Minor Advances, TW Major Out *UPDATED*
by
DPlaya ,
3/13/2010
The Tier I State Hockey Championships began last night in Madison. Team Wisconsin Minor squared off against the Madison Capitols Minor squad and came away with a 2-0 victory, including an empty-net goal. Today they clinched the title with a double overtime victory against the Capitols, and will move on the the Central District Tournament next weekend in Fond du Lac.
TW Major tied the Jr. Admirals 3-3 last night and defeated the Jr. Gamblers 5-0 this morning. They square off against the Capitols tonight. The top two teams out of the group of four (TW, Caps, Admirals, Gamblers) will play for the title tomorrow at noon.
EDIT: The Capitols defeated Team Wisconsin Major Saturday night, and it appeared as if the Capitols and Admirals would be advancing to the state title game.
Hockey: Team Wisconsin Major Shorthanded for State Tournament
by
DPlaya ,
3/12/2010
Team Wisconsin Major and Minor begin play in the Tier I State Tournament tonight,
as mentioned previously.
Rosters for all teams apparently had to be submitted by December 31, 2009, which is part of the reason why Team Wisconsin Major is going to be shorthanded for the State Playoffs and beyond if they advance. Since that time, Verona defenseman Joe Fiala has joined the USNTDP U-17 squad. In addition, Nolan Kirley is ill and will not be able to play this weekend, leaving TW Major with just four of their "regular" defensemen. It sounds like Appleton teammates Erik Larabell and Dustin Klitzke may be used at defense some or all of the time as well to help fill the void.
In addition to the defensive shortage, I've heard Brian Berger is going to stay with Janesville Jets of the NAHL this weekend. He has been playing with the Jets since Arrowhead was eliminated in Sectional play a few weeks ago.
Hockey: Grosenick & Nelson Make College Commitments & More

Cedar Rapids Roughrider goaltender Troy Grosenick, from Brookfield, Wisconsin,
has accepted a scholarship to Union College. He will join Union for next season.
Wisconsin Rapids native Josh Nelson, a defenseman for the Fairbanks Ice Dogs of the NAHL,
has committed to Minnesota State Mankato of the WCHA for next season.
Typically I get angry with myself for things that I don't write rather than things that I do write and end up not liking. In my
"Playing Catch Up" post earlier today, I neglected to provide
a link to this post that I made on December 29th, 2009. In the post I made mention that University School's schedule reminded me of Arrowhead's schedule last season. I did not go on to say it would be ironic if they followed in Arrowhead's footsteps, although I did say that to Chris Walby via phone after I put up that post. It typically happens about once every three months where I kick myself for not writing what I was thinking, and that is the latest installment!
