Eau Claire Memorial's Ellenson receives three scholarship offers

By Mark Miller
Wishoops.net Editor

Eau Claire Memorial sophomore Wally Ellenson was ultra productive for the Wisconsin Playground Warriors 15U squad during grassroots tournaments in Indianapolis and Louisville last week.

An athletic 6-foot-4 left-handed wing guard currently ranked No. 3 among state prospects in the class of 2012 by Wishoops.net, Ellenson helped lead the Playground Warriors to runner-up finishes at both the Hoosier Shootout and Kentucky Hoopfest events.

His strong play in both events did not go unnoticed as he recently garnered scholarship offers from Saint Louis, UW-Green Bay and UW-Milwaukee.

“Wally handled the ball very well in both tournaments, which is something the college coaches wanted to see,” said Ritchie Davis, the executive director of the Playground Warriors. “He showed his athleticism and ability to get up-and-down the floor. He also shot the ball very well at the end of Indianapolis and beginning of Louisville, and that sealed the deal.”

Ellenson averaged 10.1 points per game as a freshman at Memorial and earned honorable mention all-league honors in the Big Rivers Conference.

In addition to the scholarship offers from Saint Louis, Green Bay and Milwaukee, Ellenson is receiving recruiting interest from Minnesota, Northern Iowa and Wisconsin, among others.

Ellenson’s father, John, is a 1986 graduate of Menominee who played college basketball at Marquette and Wisconsin.

Buzz surrounding Menomonee Falls’ Tokoto continues

Other than perhaps Vander Blue of Madison Memorial, no other player in Wisconsin is generating as much buzz or recruiting interest as Menomonee Falls sophomore J.P. Tokoto.

An athletic, skilled and poised 6-5 wing forward, Tokoto sits atop the Wishoops.net Player Rankings for the class of 2012, and he is now beginning to move upward in national rankings as well. Scout.com and Rivals.com have done stories on Tokoto in recent weeks after he lead the Playground Warriors to a great deal of success in national tournaments.

Davis said Tokoto currently has offers from Iowa, Kansas, Marquette, Minnesota, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

In addition, Arizona, Arizona State, Boston College, Colorado, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Indiana, Miami (Fla.), North Carolina, Notre Dame, Oregon State, Penn State, Stanford, Texas Tech, UCLA and West Virginia are showing strong interest in Tokoto, who will play for Menomonee Falls this weekend in the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Summer Tournament at Kaukauna High School.

Additional updates on Playground Warrior team members

Davis provided the following updates on other members of the Wisconsin Playground Warrior program:

Ben Mills, 7-1, Sr., Arrowhead – Offers from Ball State, Florida Gulf Coast, Indiana State, Loyola of Chicago, Montana State, North Dakota, North Dakota State, Texas-San Antonio, Texas State, Utah State, Weber State and UW-Milwaukee. Interest from Boise State, Colorado, Colorado State, Creighton, Davidson, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri State, Nevada, Oregon State and Tulsa.

Kaukauna’s Schalow receives interest from Central Michigan

Kaukauna senior Jake Schalow is receiving recruiting interest from Central Michigan University and Division II Bemidji State, among others.

Schalow, a 6-3 wing guard with outstanding perimeter shooting skills, helped lead the Wisconsin Blizzard-Schalow squad to the Bronze Division championship at the Kentucky Hoopfest in Louisville last week.

New London senior Trevor Hass, a 6-3 wing guard, also played well for the Blizzard and has scholarship offers from Division II Augustana, Bemidji State and the University of Mary.

Antigo senior Jordan Mach and Fox Valley Lutheran senior Micah Parlow also turned in solid performances for the Blizzard.

Wisconsin Swing-Shaw captures Copper Division title at Kentucky Hoopfest

Andy Fox of Arrowhead had 12 points, seven assists and five rebounds to lead the Wisconsin Swing-Shaw 17U grassroots squad to a victory over Florida Gulf Coast Rams in the Copper Division title game of the Kentucky Hoopfest in Louisville last week.

In addition to Fox, the Swing got strong performances from Elkhorn senior Skyler O’Laughlin, who had 10 points and five rebounds, and River Ridge junior Weston Nimitz, who had 11 points.

Quick Hitters … Jalen McCloud’s waiver for eligibility was denied by the WIAA last week. McCloud, a 5-10 senior point guard, played at Germantown last season before moving to the Menomonee Falls School District in the spring. The WIAA ruled McCloud’s move was not “a complete and total move of the family” since the new residence was just a few miles away from the previous residence. In addition, the WIAA did not identify the presence of extenuating circumstances that would mitigate the current transfer rule. And the WIAA also received documentation from Germantown that indicated the transfer was athletically motivated. McCloud would retain WIAA eligibility if he chooses to return to Germantown.
