Cedarburg's Rank Chooses Basketball and the University of Northern Iowa

By Travis Wilson
WisHoops.net Writer

For many elite high school athletes, making a decision about what school to attend is a difficult enough process. For Cedarburg's Chip Rank, that decision was made more difficult by the fact he was receiving Division 1 attention for both basketball and football.

Rank has made his decision, though, giving a verbal commitment to University of Northern Iowa Coach Ben Jacobsen. According to Wisconsin Swing 17U coach Tyler Selk, Rank choose the Panthers over offers from UW-Milwaukee, UW-Green Bay, Miami (OH), North Dakota State, William & Mary, Missouri State, and Loyola (Chicago).

"Chip and his family were very thorough in their examination of the colleges recruiting him," Selk said. "They visited many of the schools who had offered 2-3 times. They did a great job in getting to know the coaches and campuses at each school, but in the end, I think Chip just liked what UNI had to offer him as a student-athlete."

Rank also received significant attention for his football exploits. Ranked the #4 quarterback prospect by WisSports.net's Marlin Lee, Rank attended a number of elite football camps throughout the summer. Ultimately, his passion for basketball won out and is where his heart led him.

"Chip was very comfortable with the people he'd be surrounded by and the situation he will be walking into at Northern Iowa," Selk added. "UNI is thrilled to have Chip, as well they should be. His ability as a basketball player pales in comparison to the type of kid he is."

Currently ranked No. 5 among state prospects in the class of 2010 by Wishoops.net, Rank is a relentless competitor on both ends of the court who has developed a solid mid-range jump shot to go along with his ability to score in the lane.

Chip spent the spring and summer competing for the Wisconsin Swing 17U squad coached by Tyler Selk.

Rank will join brothers Adam and Jake Koch (Ashwaubenon HS) as recent Wisconsinites to suite up for the Panthers. Adam will be a senior this year, while Jake will be a redshirt freshman.
