Wisconsin Lutheran's Davis latest state prep star to pick Loyola

By Mark Miller
Wishoops.net Editor

The pipeline from Milwaukee to Chicago continued to flow Thursday evening when Wisconsin Lutheran senior Flavien Davis announced he would accept a basketball scholarship to attend Loyola University.

Loyola coach Jim Whitesell has made Milwaukee a priority recruiting area, and his efforts, along with those of assistant coaches like Milwaukee native Lou Chapman, have paid off in a huge way over the past several seasons.

In 2005, Whitefish Bay Dominican standout J.R. Blount committed to play for the Ramblers. Blount finished a strong four-year career at Loyola last season and is now a graduate assistant coach at UW-Stevens Point.

In 2006, Oshkosh West forward Andy Polka, who won the state’s coveted Mr. Basketball award, selected Loyola and is expected to play a major role for the Ramblers once again in 2009-10 after missing much of last season with an injury.

In 2008, both John Benkoske of Oshkosh West and Tom Neary of Catholic Memorial opted to play for Whitesell at Loyola.

And last season, highly regarded Ben Averkamp of Germantown picked Loyola over offers from many other schools at the NCAA Division I level.

Ranked No. 7 among state seniors by WisSports.net, Davis is a skilled and athletic wing forward who can attack the rim off the dribble as well as make mid-range jump shots. He is an outstanding rebounder on both ends of the floor.

A three-time first-team all-league pick in the Wisconsin Little Ten Conference, Davis led Wisconsin Lutheran to the WIAA Division 2 state title a year ago when he averaged 16.9 points and 8.4 rebounds for a Vikings’ squad that finished 24-2.

In a 79-67 victory over Monroe in the title game, Davis finished with 29 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocked shots. In a thrilling 61-58 victory over Northwestern in the state semifinals, Davis finished with 24 points and seven rebounds, and made four-of-six shots from beyond the three-point arc.

Davis also considered scholarship offers from Bowling Green and North Dakota.

Davis is the 12th player from Wisconsin in the class of 2010 to verbally commit to a Division I school. He joins …

Vander Blue of Madison Memorial (Marquette)

Evan Anderson of Eau Claire North (Wisconsin)

Josh Gasser of Port Washington (Wisconsin)

Kameron Cerroni of Sussex Hamilton (Green Bay)

Chip Rank of Cedarburg (Northern Iowa)

Kyle Kelm of Randolph (Milwaukee)

Ben Mills of Arrowhead (Boise State)

Steve McWhorter of Racine St. Catherine’s (Indiana State)

T.J. Bray of Catholic Memorial (Princeton)

Troy Huff of Brookfield Academy (North Dakota)

Evan Richard of Cuba City (Milwaukee)

Wisconsin Playmakers to host tryout sessions

The Wisconsin Playmakers grassroots program will hold tryouts for teams at the 14U (class of 2014), 15U (class of 2013) and 16U (class of 214) levels on November 7 at St. Mark’s Lutheran School in Eau Claire.

The tryout will last from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and there is a $25 fee to take part. Only 50 players will be allowed to try out for the program so quick registration is recommended. To register, please email Jason Jesperson at jjesperson@usafundingcorp.com or jesperson4@hotmail.com. Please include the player’s name, age, email address, high school, height and position.

Quick Hitters … Former UW-Whitewater guard Matt Jones has resigned as the varsity basketball coach at Milwaukee Custer … Former UW-Parkside coach Jeff Rutter, now an assistant coach at Iowa State, watched Paul Jesperson of Merrill and Phil Romback of Seymour in open-gym workout sessions this week … Antigo senior guard Jordan Mach plans to take his second visit to UW-Parkside next week. Parkside, a NCAA Division II school, offered Mach a scholarship last month.
