Wishoops.net Editor Kimberly senior Matt Craggs became the fifth player in Wisconsin to verbally accept a scholarship offer from a NCAA Division II basketball program this week, selecting Northern Michigan over Bemidji State and the University of Mary.
The lone underclassmen named first-team all-conference in the Fox Valley Association in 2008-09, Craggs joins New London’s Trevor Hass (Augustana), Kaukauna’s Jake Schalow (Bemidji State), De Pere’s Brandon Pritzl (Hillsdale) and Catholic Memorial’s Derek Schell (Hillsdale) as state players to accept a Division II scholarship.
“I really liked the school of the school,” said Craggs, a physical and skilled 6-foot-6 combination forward. “It was bigger than the other schools I visited, and I liked that.
“I also liked the coaches and the players in the Northern Michigan program. They seem like the type of people I could really get along with.”
Ranked No. 17 among state seniors by WisSports.net, Craggs averaged just over 15 points per game as a junior while helping Kimberly to a 18-6 record, including a 13-5 mark in the Fox Valley Association.
Kimberly is expected to field another quality team under coach Lucky Wurtz in 2009-10 as Craggs joins seniors Dylan Wurtz and Logan Heitpas as returning regulars for the Papermakers.
“It was a tough decision because I liked all of the schools a lot,” Craggs said. “But I’m happy to have it behind me now. It’s a big relief to have selected where I’ll play college basketball.”
Northern Michigan is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and finished 11-16 last season. Former Milwaukee South Division standouts Martin Gross and Raymont McElroy are members of the Northern Michigan program.
Craggs is also a standout linebacker and wide receiver for the highly successful Kimberly football program. He played for the Development Through Athletics grassroots program last spring and summer.
Quick Hitters … Fox Valley Lutheran senior Micah Parlow plans to take an official visit to Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 29.
