Brodhead junior J.J. Panoske decides to re-open his recruitment

By Mark Miller

Saying the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay remains at the very top of his list of potential colleges, Brodhead junior J.J. Panoske said today he nonetheless will open up his recruitment after committing to play for the Phoenix in late July.

The 6-foot-9 Panoske gave a verbal commitment to Green Bay coach Tod Kowalczyk on July 26, but said today it was a premature decision. He told Kowalczyk of his decision to decommit from Green Bay earlier this week.

“There is nothing wrong with Green Bay, but I feel I’m just too young to make a decision like that,” Panoske said. “I rushed into the decision. I feel I need to slow down a bit and weigh my options.”

Currently ranked No. 5 among state prospects in the junior class by Wishoops.net, Panoske has made tremendous strides in his overall game since the end of the 2008-09 high school season.

A two-year starter under coach Brian Kammerer at Brodhead, Panoske is a long, lanky and skilled combination forward who can step out and knock down three-point shots while also swatting away field-goal attempts on the other end of the floor.

Panoske most certainly needs to add weight and strength to his frame, but those are things he’ll likely be able to accomplish over the course of his prep and collegiate career.

Panoske averaged 14.8 points per game and helped Brodhead to a 14-8 record as a sophomore. He earned first-team all-league honors in the Southern Division of the Rock Valley Conference.

"I don’t know what other schools would be interested in me … I guess I will kind of wait and see,” Panoske said. “I’ll see how things go. I definitely won’t be in a hurry at all to make a decision.

“I know Green Bay will remain very high on my list. The coaches at Green Bay didn’t to anything wrong … they did a super job recruiting me. I just kind of want to wait and see how things work out.”

Wisconsin Lutheran coach Ryan Walz comments on Davis’ decision

Wisconsin Lutheran coach Ryan Walz was unavailable last weekend to comment on the decision of Vikings’ forward Flavien Davis to play college basketball at Loyola University in Chicago.

Walz returned to the state Monday and offered the following comments regarding his standout senior:

“I think the things that stood out about Loyola was how consistent they were in the recruiting process,” Walz said. “The coaching staff really did a great job of trying to get to know Flavien and what type of kid he is off the court. Loyola was very honest about how they would push him off the court academically and that they would have high expectations for him in the classroom as well as on the basketball court.

“The opportunity to contribute as a freshman and being able to play close to home were also big factors. (Assistant coach) Lou (Chapman) was just another positive for him to decide to go to Loyola. Lou is a person Flavien knows and feels comfortable around. We have very high expectations for Flavien this year. We will need him to play at a high level every night and help make his teammates better.

“There may be some nights were offensively he has to put our team on his back, and to do that he is going to have to shoot the ball better than he has in the past. Flavien must also develop into a positive leader. He has the charisma to lead now he just has to understand how to use it.”

Quick Hitters … Tyler Koski, a 5-9 senior point guard from Ashwaubenon, is receiving recruiting interest from Coe, Edgewood, Lake Forest, Lakeland, Northern Michigan, River Falls, Stout and Superior, among others … Former Cedar Grove and Northwestern University standout Nathan Pomeday, now an assistant coach at Oregon State, watched both Paul Jesperson of Merrill and Phil Romback of Seymour in Open Gym workout sessions this week … Butler assistant coach Matthew Graves watched Jesperson and Eau Claire Memorial sophomore Wally Ellenson in Open Gym sessions this week … Coaches from Iowa State and North Dakota State stopped by Onalaska in recent days to visit with sophomore Nick Arenz.

Are all these players de-comitting so they can receive the perks of being shuttled around to different schools as they attempt to recruit them?

the pressure from coaches can be intense, players get caught up in the excitement, this is something they have waited for, often hasty quick decisions and with time they realize it
