Cerroni erupts for 38 in victory; Horlick tops Tremper in Southeast showdown

Sussex Hamilton junior Kameron Cerroni is picking up where he left off last year in the scoring department.

The gifted 6-foot-2 combination guard, who averaged a whopping 26.3 points per game as a sophomore, pumped in 38 points Tuesday to lead the Chargers to a 79-68 victory over visiting Menomonee Falls in a Greater Metro Conference contest.

Cerroni, the son of Hamilton coach Andy Cerroni, knocked down a career-best seven three-point baskets en route to his 38 points. Cerroni scored 16 points in the fourth period when the Chargers outscored the Indians, 25-14, to break away from a 54-54 deadlock after three periods.

“It was a battle all the way,” Andy Cerroni said. “The game was tied at the end of each period before we really stepped it up a notch on defense in the fourth period.

“I was surprised when the game was over and I was told Kameron had 38. It was kind of a quiet 38. He did shoot 50 percent from the floor and made some big three-point shots in the fourth period.”

Cerroni became the school's all-time scoring leader and surpassed the 1,000-point plateau last Friday in a victory over West Allis Hale. He has now scored 1,044 points during his two-plus years of varsity competition, and is averaging 24.5 ppg this year for the 4-2 Chargers.

“I enjoy it from the standpoint that we are winning some games and can be a team that can be pretty good at times,” coach Cerroni said when asked about his son’s scoring achievements.

Coach Cerroni was quick to praise the contributions of other Hamilton players, including junior guard Brian Gryszkiewicz, who had four assists in the third period and played strong on-the-ball defense; junior guard Brett Meinecke, who scored 18 points and converted key free throws down the stretch; senior forward Justin Rupnow, who did not play basketball last season but scored six key points in the third period; and junior guard Jake Flegner, who played strong defense throughout the contest.

Menomonee Falls freshman J.P. Tokoto, a promising 6-4 wing player, finished with 23 points to lead the Indians.

“He’s a load, no question about it,” coach Cerroni said. “He was knocking down the 12-foot jumper and we decided to take that way in the fourth period. He did not score in the fourth period and Kameron did a heck of a job guarding him in the fourth quarter.”

Menomonee Falls senior Luke Russell, a 6-9 forward ranked among the top prospects in the state in the class of 2009, suited for the contest but did not play.

Racine Horlick downs Kenosha Tremper in Southeast showdown

Visiting Racine Horlick had to work hard for its 66-61 victory over upstart Kenosha Tremper Tuesday night, but Rebels’ coach Jason Treutelaar was nonetheless thrilled to leave Kenosha with a victory on a snowy Tuesday.

“Tremper is going to be a tough out for teams this season,” Treutelaar said. “If they continue to play like they did last night, I could see them coming out of their sectional. They are well balanced and extremely well coached.”

Horlick got 23 points, six rebounds, five blocked shots and four assists from senior forward Jamil Wilson, who sat out the first 4 minutes, 23 seconds of the game for disciplinary reasons.

The 6-7 Wilson, who has narrowed his list of colleges to Michigan State, Oregon and Texas, became the ‘go-to’ player for the Rebels after Tremper managed to tie the game at 36-36 after trailing by 11 at intermission.

“Jamil played very well,” Treutelaar said. “Whenever we needed a basket, we went to Jamil and he responded.

“Offensively, I thought we struggled at times, but defensively, I thought it was out best outing of the season.”

Currently ranked No. 3 among Division 1 schools in the Wishoops.net Coaches Poll, Horlick improved to 4-0 with the victory.

Tremper, now 4-1 on the season, got 19 points from junior Ruben Williams and 14 points from promising sophomore Darell Longstreet, a 6-1 guard who is receiving recruiting interest from Wisconsin, among other NCAA Division I schools.

“I was impressed with Longstreet,” Treutelaar said. “He’s able to control the tempo of the game and he makes good decisions with the ball. He didn’t play like a sophomore. He’s a smart player who sees the floor very well.”

Wisconsin Rapids upends Eau Claire North

With 6-11 junior Evan Anderson sidelined with a severe ankle sprain, Wisconsin Rapids registered an impressive 44-38 victory over visiting Eau Claire North Tuesday.

In a matchup of future NCAA Division I players, UW-Green Bay recruit Clayton Heuer (6-9) of Wisconsin Rapids finished with a game-high 18 points while Central Michigan recruit Tyler Brown (6-8) of North had 10.

North opened the season with three straight victories, but has since lost non-league games to Superior and Wisconsin Rapids. Anderson, a Wisconsin recruit and the top-ranked player in the state in the class of 2010 in the Wishoops.net Player Rankings, went down with his injury in the fourth period of North’s loss to Superior last Friday.
