Division 4 Sectional Semifinal Breakdowns

by Jennie Adrian, 3/17/2010

Sectional #1 –
#1 Northwood (23-0, 12-0) vs. #1 Clayton (19-3, 10-2) @ Spooner – 6 pm
Clayton has been the dominant force in the Lakeland Central Conference the last eight years.  With four returning starters from last year’s team that went 20-3, they again were the odds on favorite to repeat as conference champs, but Northwood had a different idea.  They shared a piece of that conference crown last season and were determined to compete for the outright title this year.  Their determination paid off and they won the Lakeland Central title by two games.  Finishing right behind them was none other than the Clayton Bears.  Clayton will come into this game with something to prove as they have won regional titles the last four years, but have never made it past the sectional semifinal.  With relentless, in-your-face defense, they will want to keep the score low, but the Evergreens will look to push the ball up the floor and want to push the pace.  If Clayton can control the tempo and keep the score in the 30s they will have a chance, but if they let Northwood get out and run the game will go to the Evergreens.  This is the typical, “its tough to beat a team three times in the same season” scenario as these league rivals have squared off twice, Northwood taking both games by scores of 47-29 and 42-35.  Key for Northwood will be solid play from seniors Rachel Hanley and inside outside duo of the Block cousins.  In their regional finals, Northwood beat #2 Siren by three and Clayton beat #2 Luck by 10.

#1 Prentice (23-2, 10-0) vs. #1 Owen-Withee (21-4, 14-2) @ Spooner – 8 pm
Owen-Withee returned all five starters and at least ten players from last year’s squad.  Where they have an abundance of experience, they have a shortage of height, with no player over 5-foot-8.  Although their posts are smaller than most, they have the ability to play pretty big.  They will have to come up big as Prentice has three of their four double digit scorers are post players in Anderson, Hallstrand and Niemi.  Prentice ran away with the Marawood South Conference title going a perfect 10-0, but they also played a very competitive non-conference schedule that included Siren, Butternut, Flambeau and Newman (their two losses came at the hands of Flambeau and Newman), which will surely help heading into the final stretch of tournament play.  Prentice has a high powered offense that will be tough for O-W to match up with, but if they can contain the points on the post, they could punch their ticket to the next round.

Sectional #2 –

#1 Newman (22-2, 13-1) vs. # 1 Assumption (23-2, 12-2) @Wausau East – 7 pm
In many opinions, this game will have the makings of a state championship game, but unfortunately is taking place in the sectional semifinals between league rivals.  Assumption is on a mission to take their program to a higher level as this group lost by three points to Potosi in the sectional finals last season.  The Royals are known for their defense and have typically been able to slow teams down.  Newman, however, will pose a problem for the Royals.  This high octane offense has scored 70 or more points eleven times this season.  They have three players averaging double figures, most notably junior Taylor Thomas (13.7 ppg).  They destroyed #2 Wabeno 75-26 and have just appeared to be on a mission this post season.  With both team’s playing in the Marawood South, they have met twice this season and both have been victorious once.  This game will more than likely come down to the wire will really depend on a couple key pieces.  If Assumption can exploit the fact that Newman’s roster is very young and less tournament tested they might be able to force them into turnovers and bad shots.  Newman is going to have to be composed, run their offense and take care of the ball.  There’s no love loss between these two so be prepared for a knock-down, drag out fight to the end!

#2 Wausaukee (14-11, 8-8) vs. #1 Marion (24-1, 17-1) @ Pulaski – 7 pm
Wausaukee has won the last two Marinette & Oconto Conference titles but have been failed to make it out of regional play, losing both years in the finals to conference foe Niagara.  This year, their luck has changed.  They finished middle of the pack in conference play, but find themselves entering into sectional play.  They have survived the first three rounds with wins over #7 Suring, #3 Laona and #4 St. Thomas Aquinas.  Their sectional semifinal matchup is the first of the post season they will face an opponent seeded higher than them.  They do not have a very deep bench and watch for them to turn up the heat with their pesky 1-3-1 defense that typically gives opponents trouble.  It will have to in order to contain a high powered Marion team that is averaging 62 points per game, while only giving up 36.  They have only been held to under 40 points once this season, and it was the one game they lost so if Wausaukee’s defense can create turnovers and push the Mustangs into poor shots, they could pull off the upset.  Marion will have to stay focused, which could be more difficult for a young team, but if they can stay controlled and play their game, they will find themselves in the sectional finals.

Sectional # 3 –

#3 Alma/Pepin (17-6, 9-4) vs. #1 Independence (23-1, 13-0) @ Osseo-Fairchild – 7 pm
Independence ran away with the Dairyland Small Conference title this year.  The team that finished in second, Alma/Pepin finished four games behind them.  These two teams have seen each other twice this year, Independence taking both games by an average of 25 points.  The Indees returned a core group of experienced players that work well together, are unselfish and very strong defensively.  They are led offensively by 5-foot-10 junior Jenna Brandt (11.9 ppg) and 5-foot-9 senior Steph Walek (13.1 ppg).  With a solid supporting cast, this is another team in division 4 that is capable of putting up big numbers, scoring 50+ points in 17 of their 25 games.  Alma and Pepin were able to set aside their non-conference rivalry and join forces and the product was a much improved team than either had independently.  The co-op led to a second place conference finish, after both teams were middle to bottom of the pack last season.  The Eagles will have to find a way to stop Steph Walek who has scored in double figures in both meetings.

#1 Weston (22-3, 12-2) vs. #3 Potosi (19-6, 10-2) @ Mineral Point – 7 pm
Weston finished second in the Ridge & Valley Conference behind Seneca, whom Potosi just beat to advance to the sectional semifinals.  The Silver Eagles have stormed through the season behind the play of Chelsea Drea and Hillary Frey, who are both averaging in double figures.  They also returned a solid group from last year’s 14-0 conference finish and as a team are very quick and have a number of players that can step up in score when needed.  Their quickness makes them a legitimate threat on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball, but they have a fairly young team, with only two seniors on their roster.  Potosi’s roster, on the other hand, is full of seniors.  Seniors that know the sweet taste of the state tournament.  Last season they made a magical run to the state title game, falling short and bringing home a silver ball.  This year’s Chieftains look much different than last year’s though as they lost three first team all-conference players as well as their head coach.  They have made some noise as the number three seed by beating #6 Cassville, #2 River Ridge and #1 Seneca (whom Weston has failed to beat this season).  Potosi’s defense clamped down on Ostrander and Alanis (two of Seneca’s double digit scorers) and will have to be able to do the same to Drea and Frey.  If they can do that, the Chieftains will be one step closer to getting back to the state tourney.

Sectional #4 –

#1 Black Hawk (24-1, 12-0) vs. #3 Albany (13-11, 5-7) @ Evansville – 7 pm
Black Hawk made it to the state tournament last season and entered this year with the same goal in mind.  They had to fill in for graduated POY Paige Butler, but have had the Wellnitz tandem step up to help fill that void.  The Warriors are quick and tall, with four players over 5-foot-10.  Albany returned all but two players from last year’s squad and have speed of their own but only have one player that stands 5-foot-10.  In their previous two meetings, Black Hawk has been victorious, 47-34 and 61-13.  Albany will have to find a way to contain the Warriors bigs and their three double digit scorers will need to step up if they have any chance of advancing.  They have had impressive victories over #6 Monticello, #2 Juda and then #1 Catholic Central.  They will have to pull off another upset against a tournament veteran team to continue on their quest for a ball.

#1 Central WI Christian (22-3, 12-2) vs. #2 Manitowoc Lutheran (15-10, 9-9) @ Watertown – 7 pm
CWC returned all but one player from last year’s 16-6 team, including Jamie Kok.  The 6-foot senior is averaging 16.8 points per game and grabbed her 1000th rebound of her career just recently.  This is a team with depth, experience and the ability to score from a multitude of players and that has helped them to get to the sectional semifinals.  Manitowoc Lutheran has a strong senior class that helped them to an overall record of 15-10, but was unable to help them to a better than .500 record in conference play, which they haven’t done since 2003-04.  However, they have been able to beat #7 Trinity Academy, #3 Sheboygan County Christian and #1 Elkhart Lake to advance to sectional play.  They will have to contain Kok and company in the post if they hope to get to squash CWC’s hopes for a gold ball.

Contender Report #4 - Returning Several of Last Year's Starters

by Jennie Adrian, 3/16/2010

Division 1 – Waterford (21-3, 11-3)

Top Returners –
Stephanie Rank – 5’10 Sophomore Guard
Alicia Santaga – 5’11 Senior Guard
Jenny Carriveau – 5’7 Senior Guard
Sam Hribar – 5’9 Senior Guard/Forward

Other Key Players –
Courtney Ramczyk – 5’9 Junior Forward
Alyssa Baker – 5’9 Senior Guard

Team Strengths – The Wolverines return four of their starters from last year’s team that finished third in the Southern Lakes Conference and three of those players are averaging more than nine points per game this season.  They have tremendous height in their guard position, with two guards over 5’10, which makes them difficult matchups for most teams.  In addition to their height, they are extremely athletic and use that athleticism to get up and down the floor and pressure their opponents.  They are also a veteran team, with eight seniors on their roster and those seniors know the taste of the state tournament.  Waterford took home a silver ball back in 2006 and these seniors are determined to bring home another.

To get to the next level- Thus far, Waterford has taken care of business in the tournament with wins over #6 seed Greenfield and #5 seed West Allis Central, but they will have to bring their A game on Friday night when they take on Muskego, the only Wisconsin team to beat Vincent this season.  However, if they can put forth a consistent effort on both ends of the floor for the entire 32 minutes, they will have a shot at advancing to the sectional finals.  With the length of the season wearing on them mentally and physically, this veteran team will need to find a way to step up under pressure if they have any hopes of making it back to Madison in search of another ball.

Division 2 – Wittenberg-Birnamwood (23-1, 14-0)

Top Returners –
Courtney Rosenow – 5’9 Senior Guard (pictured)
Ashley Backes – 5’9 Senior Guard
Tricia Monnot – 5’7 Senior Guard
Ashley Koeller – 5’9 Senior Forward
Lycia Linke – 5’7 Senior Forward
Hannah School – 5’5 Senior Guard
Kaylee Hartleben – 5’7 Senior Guard

Other Key Players –
Savanah Vera – 5’9 Freshman Forward
Megan School – 5’7 Freshman Guard
Danika Decorah – 5’7 Sophomore Guard

Team Strengths – Much like Waterford, W-B returns four of their five starters this season and seven seniors overall that have gotten a great deal of varsity experience under their belts.  They were all key members of last year’s team that set a school record for number of wins and the first girl’s team in school history to make it to the sectionals, where they were beaten by eventual runner-up, Durrand.  They have two players that have gone over the 1000 point mark this season in seniors Ashley Backes and Courtney Rosenow and in addition to that they have good team speed and capable ball handlers.  They have the ability to score both inside and out and have used their success and downfall to Durrand last year as a motivator to take their game to the next level.  They find themselves in another sectional semifinal this week, but this year they will go head to head with Medford Area on Thursday night.

To get to the next level – This team needs to find a way to put a whole game together.  They have spurts of greatness but haven’t been able to hold that for an entire game thus far, but have steadily improved throughout the season.  They could be peaking at just the right time, which they will need in order to not only win on Thursday, but then to potentially take on Hayward or Altoona in the finals for the right to head to Madison.  If it comes down to just who wants it more, the edge will go to W-B as these girls have the determination and desire to take this program to even bigger heights.

Division 3 - Brillion (24-1, 18-0)

Top Returners –
Alyssa Olp – 5’9 Senior Guard (pictured below)
Shawna Levash – 5’9 Senior Guard
Tori Ruffing – 5’6 Senior Guard
Kylie Moxley – 6’0 Sophomore Forward

Other Key Players –
Tiffany Janke – 5’7 Junior Guard
Brooke Geiger – 5’10 Senior Forward
Jennifer Eickert – 5’8 Junior Guard

Team Strengths – This is a very solid team defensively that doesn’t make many mistakes on the defensive side of the ball.  They box out and do a nice job of rebounding from all five spots.  While they are good on that end of the floor, they also have three players averaging more than 10 points per game in Moxley, Olp and Levash.  They are very unselfish and move the ball well and do an excellent job of taking good shots within the flow of their offense.  They have won their first three tournament games fairly soundly, but will be challenged in their next round against OshKosh Lourdes.

To get to the next level – As with most teams, they really need to continue to focus on the fundamentals.  They are very solid at most times, but will need to continue that in each and every possession fine tune their fundamentals an make sure they are solid each and every possession as they advance.  This is a team that just needs to continue to play their game and if they can do that, we will be seeing them in Madison.

Division 4 – Independence (23-1, 13-0)

Top Returners –
Stephanie Walek – 5’8 Senior Guard
Calla Nelson – 5’8 Senior Forward
Jeana Manka – 5’9 Senior Forward
Jenna Brandt – 5’10 Junior Forward
Bria Halama – 5’11 Junior Forward

Other Key Players –
Larissa Skroch – 5’6 Junior Guard
Mara Baecker – 5’4 Senior Guard
Molly Backman – 5’5 Junior Guard
Meagan Pronschinske – 5’9 Junior

Team Strengths – The Indees are on a roll as they have won 23 straight after losing their opening game to Mondovi.  Not only are they winning, they typically are destroying their competition, outscoring their opponents in the last three tournament games by an average of 41 points.  They are strong defensively but also provide a balanced attack on the offensive end of the floor.  They returned all five starters from last year’s 19-5 squad that lost to Assumption in the sectional semi-final and this year hope to improve on that finish.  They will face conference rival Alma/Pepin in the semis Thursday night.

To get to the next level – Confidence will not be an issue for this team as they have stormed through their first three tournament games, but they will need to stay focused as the pressure is turned up this next round.  They will face Alma/Pepin in the sectional semi finals and have beaten them twice this year by an average of 25 points.  If this team can continue to prove effective in the half court and take care of the basketball, they will be tough to beat and will most likely contend for a ball in Madison.

Two perfect sectionals remain, almost all ranked teams survive as Regional Final slate set

by Jay Messar, 3/12/2010

By Jay Messar
Wisconsin Sports Network

Perhaps the most common feature of the girls high school basketball landscape this entire season has been stability. Aside from a couple big upsets earlier in the year, favored teams have been In Charge (much like Charles) thus far. And like other awesome 80's sitcoms, those teams will hope to have some staying power in the race to the Sectionals next weekend. Following is Thursday's regional semifinal rundown.

"Perfect" Strangers

Exactly two sectional brackets have gone completely perfect thus far, with each top-ranked team defeating its respective lower seed. The Division 2 Seymour sectional is stacked with talent, and should provide for four excellent regional final games on Saturday afternoon. The Spooner sectional in D4 has also been perfect thus far, as nothing but one- and two-seeds will face off for a sectional semifinal berth. Here is the docket for those two sectionals:

Seymour Sectional (Division 2)
#1 Freedom vs. #2 Notre Dame
#1 Luxemburg-Casco vs. #2 Denmark
#1 New London vs. #2 Winneconne
#1 Chilton vs. #2 Xavier

Spooner Sectional (Division 4)
#1 Northwood vs. #2 Siren
#1 Clayton vs. #2 Luck
#1 Prentice vs. #2 Butternut
#1 Owen-Withee vs. #2 Columbus Catholic

Despite a few quarterfinal upsets, the Division 3 Reedsburg sectional will also pit top seeds up and down the bracket:

Reedsburg Sectional (Division 3)
#1 Arcadia vs. #2 Pittsville
#1 Fennimore vs. #2 Aquinas
#1 Cuba City vs. #2 Belleville
#1 Deerfield vs. #2 Cambridge

Golden Girls

Speaking of top teams, 56 of the 60 teams ranked in the last WSN Coaches Poll survived the first two rounds of regional action. And while that number will drop after the regional final round-- several ranked teams will face one another Saturday-- it definitely hasn't hurt being one of those Golden Girls in the Top 15 polls. Here is a listing of ranked pairs that face off in Saturday's round:

Division 2
#3 Wittenberg-Birnamwood vs. #14 Westfield
#5 Hayward vs. #13 Ashland
#8 New London vs. #12 Winneconne
#9 Richland Center vs. #15 Sauk Prairie

Division 3
#1 Cuba City vs. #5 Belleville
#3 Lomira vs. #8 Oostburg
#8 Fall Creek vs. #10 Neillsville

Division 4
#1 Northwood vs. #12 Siren
#11 Royall vs. #13 Weston
#14 Clayton vs. #15 Luck

(Division) Three's a Crowd

The spinoff of the better-remembered 70's series Three's Company is actually a more apt title for how the Division 3 playoffs have taken shape. Four D3 teams ranked in the final WSN Coaches Poll met their seasons' end Thursday night. With the incredible depth of the D3 field this year, this list will surely not be exhaustive over the next two weeks.

Roncalli 47, #7 Algoma 44
#5 Belleville 55, #11 Parkview 51
#9 Oostburg 50, #12 Howards Grove 36
Regis 52, #15 Colfax 48

Bosom Buddies

Division 1 squads took a brief hiatus from competition Thursday, but will return in style with some pretty interesting headlines.

The Fox Valley Association and Fox River Classic conferences have quite a rivalry for Fox Valley supremacy. That rivalry will get even more heated Saturday as five FVA/FRCC matchups will take place in Bay Area sectionals.

Ashwaubenon Sectional (FRCC teams listed first)
#1 De Pere vs. #8 Appleton North
#2 Pulaski vs. #7 Appleton East
#6 Ashwaubenon vs. #3 Kaukauna
#5 Green Bay Preble vs. #4 Kimberly

Oshkosh West Sectional
#4 Sheboygan North vs. #5 Fond du Lac

Another Division 1 intra-sectional rivalry will occur across the northern portion of the state. While the Big Rivers/Wisconsin Valley sectional was for the first time integrated into a 14-team sectional rather than split into two, seven-team regionals this season, the results of the girls tournament thus far has oddly mirrored years past. The top half of the bracket features four Big Rivers teams, while the bottom half features three Wisconsin Valley squads and Lake Superior Conference member Superior. Here are Saturday's matchups:

#1 Menomonie vs. #9 River Falls
#4 Eau Claire North vs. #5 Chippewa Falls
--
#2 Marshfield vs. #7 Superior
#3 Wausau West vs. #6 D.C. Everest

It Takes Diff'rent Strokes...

Intriguing rematches shall occur across the regional final landscape, as the teams who lost the first matchup(s) are hoping for diff'rent results the second (or third) time around.

Division 2
Hayward def. Ashland 41-38
Altoona def. Durand 38-35
Richland Center def. Sauk Prairie 45-43
Monroe def. Brodhead 51-41
Union Grove swept Delavan-Darien 46-39, 54-32
Whitefish Bay split with Grafton 33-39, 48-45
Luxemburg-Casco split with Denmark 49-47, 37-42

Division 3
Osseo-Fairchild swept Regis 51-48, 65-50
Peshtigo split with Gillett 34-36, 45-38
Brillion swept Roncalli 40-25, 53-52
Deerfield def. Cambridge 61-44
Shoreland Lutheran swept Racine St. Cate's 60-44, 49-31

Division 4
Northwood def. Siren 57-33
Clayton def. Luck 40-39
Prentice def. Butternut 46-43
Owen-Withee split with Columbus Catholic 48-57, 56-40
Assumption def. Almond-Bancroft 48-38
Wausaukee swept St. Thomas Aquinas 44-20, 41-31
Eleva-Strum def. Alma/Pepin 42-39
Weston def. Royall 41-33
Black Hawk swept Barneveld 47-42, 41-19

As the theme song for perhaps the greatest 80s sitcom of all time says, "You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have the Facts of Life." The facts are, whether its Jo, Natalie, Blair, Tootie and Mrs. Garrett or the five girls on the floor, those five must take the good, bad and make that lasting impression as the field of teams narrows each night.

Check back Sunday for what should be an incredible Saturday recap of regional final play.
