Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 6 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Alumni Update

The state girls basketball games are underway today in the state of Wisconsin. Around the country, the college basketball season is coming to its end while the D2 and D3 have already began the NCAA tournament. With that being said, this will be the last installment of the Girls Basketball Alumni Round-up for the 2018-19 season.

The girls state tournament is being played at the Resch Center in Green Bay this weekend. UW-Green Bay has concluded its regular season and began conference tournament play this week. In the regular season 77-53 win over UIC, Green Bay was once again led by multiple in-state alumni. Sheboygan North’s Madison Wolf had 12 points and 11 rebounds while Oconto’s Laken James had 15 points and 6 assists. Hailey Oskey (Seymour) and Frankie Wurtz (Kimberly) each added 11 points in the win.

The UW-Oshkosh’s women’s basketball team secured two victories in the D3 NCAA Tournament to advance to the Sweet Sixteen, something the men’s program achieved as well. Leading the Titans to a 72-46 opening round win over Pomona-Pitzer College was Green Bay Preble’s Isabella Samuels. She had a game high 22 points on 11 of 12 shooting from the field. Melanie Schneider (St. Mary’s Springs) and Leah Poarth (New London) both scored in double figures. Porath and Olivia Campbell (Notre Dame) both scored in double figures in the 54-52 round of 32 win over DePauw University. Mount Horeb’s Nikki Arneson made the game winning layup with 1 second left to propel the Titans to victory.

DeForest’s Kayla Goth was recently named to a first team Big 12 All-Conference honoree. Last week in a 90-79 win over West Virginia, she had a game high 30 points, 7 assists, 4 steals, and 5 rebounds. She followed that up with another double-double on the season by scoring 10 points and adding 12 assists in a 75-67 win over Texas Tech.

William Penn University has had a pair of in-state recruits leading the team all season to a 30-2 record and a Heart of America Conference regular season and tournament championship. Oak Creek’s Jenna Santi was named an honorable mention all-conference selection. Vashti Nwagbaraocha of Pius XI was named the Player of the Year in the Heart of America Conference. In her four year career, Vashti has over 1,000 points and rebounds and sits third in school history in scoring. The duo led William Penn to three consecutive wins in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament to secure a bid in the NAIA Tournament.

Megan Gustafson has also scored over 1,000 points and hauled in 1,000 rebounds in her collegiate career and finished off another impressive week with her thirteenth Big Ten Player of the Week selection of the year. The South Shore grad averaged 31.5 points and 16 rebounds and currently has 81 double-doubles in her career. Megan was recently named the Big Ten Player of the Year by both the coaches and media.

Minnesota-Duluth took home the Northern Sun Conference Tournament Championship earlier this week behind the play of a few in-state alumni. New Berlin Eisenhower’s Sammy Kozlowski had 27 points and 7 rebounds in an 80-72 quarterfinal win over Augustana. Katie Stark (Hayward) added 15 points and 10 rebounds. Rice Lake’s Brooke Olson averaged 10 points and 8 rebounds in the following two rounds to help lead her team to a tournament win.

In other Northern Sun play, Brooklyn Liegel waited until Minnesota State-Moorhead’s 72-67 quarterfinal win over Winona State to have her season’s best game. A graduate of my alma mater, Richland Center, Liegel had a season high 16 points on 4 of 6 shooting from beyond the arc.

Despite an 81-64 loss to Central Michigan, Jasmin Samz dropped a season high 26 points for Ball State. Samz, a Wausau West grad, shot 9 of 12 from the field and 5 of 6 from three in the loss.

Chelsea Brackmann has been a double-double machine for Bradley this year. The New Berlin Eisenhower grad had a career high 25 points and 13 rebounds in an 87-76 come-from-behind win over Valparaiso. Chelsea had 17 points and 9 rebounds in the second half to lead the charge.

Jessica Kelliher has been a driving force for Lewis College all season as the Waukesha North grad has capped a prolific collegiate career by playing outstanding in her senior season. Kelliher had a team high 21 points in a 101-64 win over Quincy. Jessica however isn’t the only former Wisconsin high school grad to make plays fore Lewis. Gabby Green (PiusXI), Katie Gardner (Pius XI), and Morgan Glatczak (Mukwonago) all scored in the blowout win as well.
