Emma Nagel's basket with 2.4 seconds left lifted Bay Port to its first ever state title, edging Middleton in the Division 1 state championship game, 50-49.

Middleton took a 49-48 lead with 37 seconds left after junior Josie Lemirande knocked down a 3-pointer from the left corner and had a chance at the end, but the Cardinals pass was tipped and time expired.

The back-and-forth contest featured seven ties and seven lead changes.

Bay Port led 27-24 at halftime and built a 12 point lead at 39-27 with 10:32 left in the game before Middleton made the comeback.

The last 4:46 of the game featured four lead changes and saw the game tied once.

Bay Port was led in scoring by juniors McKenzie Johnson and sophomore Emma Krueger, who each netted 12 points for coach Kati Coleman and the Pirates.

Nagel, also a junior, finished with 11 points, 13 rebounds and 2 assists. Senior Grace Krause tallied a game-high 4 assists for the Pirates.

Bay Port shot 17-for-46 from the floor and 9 of 12 from the free throw line. They committed 10 turnovers in the win.

The benches were key for both teams in the title game, each getting 20 points from non-starters. Senior Peyton Coughlin netted 6 points off the bench, hitting a pair a 3-pointers for Bay Port.

Lemirande scored a game-high 14 points for Middleton, including going 4-for-5 from behind the arc.

Fellow junior Sitori Tanin, who holds a handful of Division I offers, finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds, 5 blocks and 3 assists. She did have some problems at the free throw line, going just 1-for-6.

Senior Karina Bursac added 10 points and 8 rebounds for WBCA Hall of Fame coach Jeff Kind.

The Cardinals shot 18-for-44 from the field, and like Bay Port, made seven 3-pointers, but made just 6 of 15 from the charity stripe.

Middleton committed 9 turnovers in the loss.

Bay Port takes home its first gold ball in its third trip to the state tournament.

Middleton finishes as the state runner-up for the third time in program history. The Cardinals have not won a gold ball in their 11 state appearances.
