Lucas Stieber

The ability to consistently communicate with his teammates.

The ability to move around multiple screens.

The ability to reach down and find the extra energy required to chase around the opponent's top offensive threat for a full 36 minutes.

The ability to provide solid senior leadership, on and off the court.

Green Bay Southwest senior guard Lucas Stieber (6-3) possesses all of those assets.

And those at times underrated yet vital characteristics helped Stieber and the Trojans capture the Fox River Classic Conference championship and earn a trip to the WIAA Division 2 sectionals.

For his efforts, Stieber has been named the top senior Defensive player as part of the WSN Senior Basketball Awards.

It figures the grandson of former UW-Stevens Point, UW-Green Bay and the University of Wisconsin coach Dick Bennett would be a great defender since Bennett built his reputation and success on strong defensive teams.

Stieber's ability to shut down opponents helped the Trojans to a 22-3 record under coach John Polkowski.

Stieber averaged 13.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.5 blocks before missing the final several games of the campaign due to an injury. The lack of his presence in the Trojans' lineup was never more felt than in the Trojans' 66-63 sectional semifinal loss to Kaukauna.

Still, Stieber did play a major role in helping Green Bay Southwest to the top of the mountain in the FRCC, a place they had not resided at since the 2000-01 season.
