By Travis Wilson

The 2019 WSN All-State Summer Shootout was held over the weekend at Beaver Dam High School, with the boys portion of the event on Sunday. A total of 27 teams participated in 41 games of wall-to-wall action, and there were some outstanding team and individual performances.

A big thank you to the staff at Beaver Dam High School for the hospitality all weekend, especially Athletic Director Melissa Gehring, Saturday host Tom Bock, and Sunday host Tim Ladron. A thank you to all the teams, players, coaches, and fans who made it an outstanding two-days of hoops, and special thank you to all the officials who worked the event. Ken Schimpf at the Wisconsin Basketball Officials Association was excellent to work with once again in assigning officials.

Below are the standings for each pool along with notes and observations from the weekend. For full game results and schedules, please click here.

Pool A

Hudson  2-1
Wauwatosa East  2-1
DeForest  2-1
Kettle Moraine  2-1
Watertown  1-2
Sheboygan South  0-3

There was no dominant team in the large schools Pool A, as no one went unbeaten in the unbalanced scheduling. Hudson made the long trip across the state and was impressive in going 2-1 on the day. The defending Big Rivers Conference champions got a big weekend from 2021 guard Luke Healy, who poured in 35 points in a loss to Wauwatosa East and averaged 23 points on the weekend. If a trophy had been awarded for pool play (there wasn't), Hudson would have gotten an edge on point differential.

Speaking of Wauwatosa East, in addition to their 62-60 win over Hudson, they posted a dominating 73-35 victory over Watertown in the first game of the day. Their quest for a perfect record came to an end against a game DeForest squad, who got 19 points from 2022 guard Max Weisbrod in a 59-58 win.

DeForest was no stranger to close games, winning by six over Sheboygan South in addition to the one-point victory against Tosa East. The Norskies' lone loss of the day came via a buzzer-beater, as Kettle Moraine's Sean Murray hit a three at the horn to lift the Lasers to a 47-46 victory. See below for video of the final shot.

Watertown's lone win came against Kettle Moraine, as 2020 guard Cade Oiler had 15 points to lead a balanced attack in a 55-43 victory.

Sheboygan South did not post a win on the day, but things are moving in the right direction under Jesse Shaw, who just completed his first season at the helm of the Redwings. The team has some solid length and athletic ability, and was very competitive in single-digit losses to DeForest and Kettle Moraine.

Pool B

Xavier  3-0
Milton  3-0
Cedarburg  1-2
Beaver Dam  1-3
South Milwaukee  0-3

Milton and Xavier both finished unbeaten in the five-team Pool B, though unfortunately the teams did not get a chance to match up with each other.

Milton won just one game in the Badger-South last season but could be a surprise team in 2019-20. Still a pretty young group, the Red Hawks were led by 2020 point guard Jack Campion (pictured). Displaying excellent ball-handling skills and the ability to create his shot from outside, mid-range, and at the rim, the lefty averaged 15 points per game, including 23 in a win over South Milwaukee.

Xavier lost a couple really talented players from last year's Bay Conference championship team, but the Hawks showed they will once again be a threat in 2019-20. With multiple players that are strong with the ball, fundamentally sound, and work hard each and every possession, Xavier took down larger schools Beaver Dam, South Milwaukee, and Cedarburg. John Bunks, Jr. (2020) had 29 points in a victory against South Milwaukee and 19 in a win over Cedarburg. 2021 wing Trent Twombly and 2021 guard Cal Mares also played well for the Hawks.

Cedarburg lost a couple competitive games to Milton and Xavier, but the Bulldogs showed they have some pieces to make a move up the North Shore standings. 2021 guard Drew Biber was impressive with his length, strength, and ability to handle the ball. He showed off an impressive outside game and an ability to finish at the rim in averaging better than 16 points per game. 2020 wings Ben Ebacher and Jake Leair also had solid showings.

Beaver Dam will be a very young team in 2019-20, and it showed at times on Sunday. 2020 guard Broden Boschert struggled in the final game of the day against Milton but averaged 14 points per game in the other three contests.

South Milwaukee got a big scoring day from 2020 wing player Luis Ortiz, who averaged 15 per game.

Pool C

Edgerton  3-0
Grafton  2-1
Catholic Memorial  1-2
Brookfield Academy  0-3

Edgerton was one of the most impressive teams at the All-State Shootout. The Crimson Tide were a perfect 3-0 on the day, with big contributions from 6-8 Nick Spang and 6-2 Brian Rusch, both 2020 prospects. Spang showed excellent hands and the ability to finish plays inside and is one to watch this year. He averaged 15 per game on Sunday, while Rusch averaged 16. 2020 guard Skylar Gullickson helped out 16 a pair of double-figure games.

Grafton rebounded from a tough opening loss to Edgerton to post wins over Catholic Memorial and Brookfield Academy, despite missing a couple normal starters in JP Benzschawel and Bryson Clague. 2020 guard Alex Huibregtse showed why he's one of the state's top prospects, averaging 19 per game. 6-6 2021 prospect Brock Heffner was impressive as well with an emerging offensive game, and 5-7 2021 dynamo Tyler Tsui was fearless in serving as the floor general and attacking much taller players.

Catholic Memorial was missing several returning regulars to other sport commitments, meaning a lot of freshmen and sophomores were playing for head coach Jeremy McGlothlin. 2020 guard George Hermes led the team in scoring in each game, averaging more than 18 points per game.

Brookfield Academy went 0-3 in playing up against larger competition, but the Blue Knights acquitted themselves very well overall. Returning All-State guard Aidan Clarey lit it up in the first game, a tough loss to Catholic Memorial. He finished with 33 points in the game with seven made three-pointers. He had 12 against Edgerton and was off to a hot start against Grafton before suffering an injury that kept him out of the second half.

Pool D

Lake Mills  3-0
Lake Country Lutheran  2-1
Sheboygan Lutheran  1-2
Richland Center  0-3

Lake Mils had four different players average in double figures in lighting up the scoreboards at Beaver Dam. Mike Herrington (2020, 6-1, G), Jaxson Retrum (2021, 6-4, F), Adam Moen (2021, 6-3, F), and Drew Stoddard (2021, 5-11, G) took turns giving the L-Cats a big lift, as the team knocked off Richland Center to open things up then took down Lake Country Lutheran and Sheboygan Lutheran in very competitive games.

Lake Country Lutheran opened its day with a 66-59 win over defending Division 5 state champion Sheboygan Lutheran, as 2022 guard Luke Haretle had a team-high 23 points. While they'd fall to Lake Mills in a close one later on, it was an excellent showing for a team that should compete for the Midwest Classic Conference title.

Sheboygan Lutheran lost a couple tough games against very good, larger opposition, but head coach Nick Verhagen's team showed they're the favorites once again in Division 5 next winter. Division 1 recruit Jacob Ognacevic was virtually unstoppable, leading the tournament in scoring at 24 points per game. Casey Verhagen showed he's ready to build on his freshman campaign, scoring 24 points against Lake Country Lutheran and 18 against Richland Center.

Richland Center lost all three games by at least 12 points, but the Hornets made things competitive in each of them at different times. There are some young players still working their way into the varsity game, and there is plenty of room for improvement in the coming months.

Pool E

Darlington  3-0
Winnebago Lutheran  2-1
The Prairie School  1-2
Columbus  0-3

Darlington won three tough games in a very competitive Pool E, though none by more than ten points. The defending SWAL champions, the Redbirds got a big day from 6-3 2021 wing player Carter Lancaster. He scored 22, 12, and 28 points on the day. 2021 wing Cayden Rankin (6-5) had a relatively quiet first game against Columbus before scoring 17 and 19 points in the next two games.

Winnebago Lutheran opened things with a 54-50 win over The Prairie School, a game they led by 15 at halftime. They'd drop a hard-fought game against Darlington before rebounding to take care of Columbus in the final contest. 2020 guard Carson Nell and Donovan Schwartz acquitted themselves very nicely, while 2022 guard Ethan Cole had 22 points in the last game against Columbus.

The Prairie School lost two games by a total of six points, as the Hawks got a nice weekend from 2021 wing Antuan Nesbitt, their leading scorer as year ago. He scored in double figures in each game on Sunday.

Columbus lost all three games but none by more than ten points. 6-5 2020 forward Ben Emler looked very good, averaging 18 points per game.

Pool F

Randolph  3-0
Neillsville  2-1
Random Lake  1-2
Oakfield  0-3

Randolph was the most dominating team at the WSN All-State Summer Shootout and it wasn't really close. The Rockets outscored their three opponents 150-86, allowing nearly 30 points fewer than any other team at the event. It was a total team effort, with six different players scoring at least seven points in a game. 2020 guard Peyton Moldenhauer, a returning First Team All-Conference choice, was a standout throughout the day.

Neillsville acquitted itself very nice. The Warriors posted dominating wins over Random Lake and Oakfield sandwiched around a ten-point defeat at the hands of Randolph. 2020 guard Alex King shot the ball pretty well and showed why he averaged more than 21 points per game last year. While 2021 point guard Braden Trunkel missed the first game of the day, he did have 16 in the last contest against Oakfield.

Random Lake had some ups and downs on Sunday, winning by 19 over Oakfield to go with big losses to Neillsville and Randolph. Oakfield played short-handed, with just five players by the end of the day.
