Week 5 WisSports.net Team of the Week Nominees

Augusta Beavers

Going up against three-time defending Dairyland Conference champion Melrose-Mindoro, the Augusta Beavers scored its only touchdown midway through the first quarter and did not complete a pass in the game, but it was enough, as Augusta held on for an 8-6 win. It put an end to a 20-game conference winning streak by Melrose-Mindoro that had dated to late in the 2015 season. Augusta saw three players combine to grind out 187 yards on the ground, as Traven Fabian scored on a one-yard plunge with 5:23 left in the first quarter and then ran in the two-point conversion. Melrose-Mindoro's only points came on the opening kickoff of the second half via an 89-yard return, but the two-point conversion run was unsuccessful and Augusta's defense made key plays when it needed to to preserve the victory.

Freedom Irish

The North Eastern Conference is always an exciting race to watch, producing some outstanding games among the many tough teams who call the league home. Friday night saw Freedom make a big statement, rallying to defeat defending conference champion and Division 4's second-ranked Wrightstown, 27-20. The game was knotted at 14 at halftime, and remained that way into the fourth quarter. Wrightstown would go up 20-14 on a one-yard Quincy Klister touchdown run, but Freedom answered to take a 21-20 lead when Reeve Lambrecht threw one of his three touchdown passes, this one to Quinn Taege. The Irish sealed the game when Conor Dickrell returned an interception 85 yards for a touchdown later in the period, as Freedom won despite gaining just 205 yards of total offense, while Wrightstown rushed for 319. However, Freedom recorded four interceptions of Wrightstown quarterbacks.

G-E-T Red Hawks

G-E-T made the move to the South Central Conference this year, and the team has adjusted just fine so far. The Red Hawks moved to 3-0 in league play with a 40-21 win over Mauston, last year's champion of the South Central. It was the 150th career victory for Red Hawks coach John Steffenhagen. In typical G-E-T fashion, the running game dominated the day, racking up 431 yards and five touchdowns on 54 carries, as the team did not attempt a pass in the game.

Nicolet Knights

It was just five years ago that Nicolet, a school of more than 1000 students, canceled its varsity football season. It was just two years ago that the team ended a conference losing streak that had reached 41 games. The team has not been to the playoffs since the 1989 season, which is also the only postseason appearance in school history. And yet, after a 24-21 victory over West Bend East, a team that has been in the playoffs the last two seasons, the Knights have a very strong chance to make the postseason in 2019. Jashawn Austin ran for 182 yards and a touchdown in the win, which went into overtime, as Nicolet kicked a field goal on its possession to win it. The Knights are now 2-3 in league play and take on winless West Bend West and one-victory Cedarburg the next two weeks. If they can win those games, the worst they'd finish would be 4-5 in league play, which would mean a 99% chance they'd qualify for the postseason.

Sun Prairie Cardinals

It was a hard-fought game, as to be expected from two top-ten teams in Division 1, but Sun Prairie had enough at the end to pull out a 27-21 victory over previously unbeaten Verona on Friday night. Sun Prairie scored first when Brady Stevens hit Colin Schaefer for a 30-yard score, but a partially blocked punt by Verona set up a short Jackson Acker touchdown run to tie things up. Sun Prairie would take a 14-7 halftime lead when Stevens hit Schaefer for another score in the second quarter. Verona tied things up in the third and went ahead 21-14 in the fourth quarter. Sun Prairie would knot things up again when Nathan Schauer went in for a score, and won the game when quarterback Brady Stevens went in for a one-yard sneak with just 15 seconds remaining to cap an 80-yard touchdown drive. Stevens finished with 230 passing yards and a score, while Schaefer hauled in seven passes for 150 yards and both touchdowns.
