Week 5 WSN Football Team of the Week: Nicolet Knights

The Nicolet Knights have been selected as the Week 5 WSN Team of the Week following a statewide vote on WSN. The team took a big step towards playoff qualification with a win close win over West Bend East. The Lasers were chosen from a strong group of nominees in Week 5. A total of 6,861 votes were cast, as Nicolet's 2,128 votes edged Sun Prairie's 1,849 votes.

It was just five years ago that Nicolet, a school of more than 1000 students, canceled its varsity football season. It was just two years ago that the team ended a conference losing streak that had reached 41 games. The team has not been to the playoffs since the 1989 season, which is also the only postseason appearance in school history. And yet, after a 24-21 victory over West Bend East, a team that has been in the playoffs the last two seasons, the Knights have a very strong chance to make the postseason in 2019. Jashawn Austin ran for 182 yards and a touchdown in the win, which went into overtime, as Nicolet kicked a field goal on its possession to win it. The Knights are now 2-3 in league play and take on winless West Bend West and one-victory Cedarburg the next two weeks. If they can win those games, the worst they'd finish would be 4-5 in league play, which would mean a 99% chance they'd qualify for the postseason.

Remember folks, the only way your favorite team can be named WSN Team of the Week is to vote and share the word. Look for the Week 6 nominees to be posted Monday afternoon.
