Many high school football standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 10 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Alumni Update

With only two weeks left of the high school football regular season, many players from around the state are suiting up for their last few games of football they’ll ever play. However, many will also be playing at the next level. We’ll continue to spotlight those that do.

It seems every week the Wisconsin Badgers get contributions from different home state players on all sides of the ball. It was no different this week in a 48-0 rout of Kent State. Fullbacks Mason Stokke of Menomonie and John Chenal of Grantsburg each contributed in rushing the ball, and also in creating holes for the runners behind them. Stoughton’s Brady Schipper saw action at tailback, rushing for 21 yards while Edgewood’s Jack Dunn rushed for a short touchdown on a jet sweep. Adam Krumholz, also of Stoughton, has been a game changer at the gunner position on special teams this year for the Badgers. This past week he added his first receptions of the season.

The WIAC football teams finally began conference play, which meant there were many alumni in action all across the state.

UW-Platteville downed sixteenth ranked UW-La Crosse 38-20 and in doing so, rocketed up to nineteenth in the latest D3football.com rankings. The Pioneers were aided on offense by Tyler Knigge of Waukesha South and Bo Babich of Appleton North, who both hauled in a receiving touchdown. On the defensive side, Jackson McMahan of Belleville had a sack and a forced fumble while Travis Klassy of Mount Horeb recorded an interception. Slinger’s Tyler Reinhardt had a team high 11 tackles, one sack, and intercepted a ball as well en route to being named the WIAC Defensive Player of the Week.

UW-Stevens Point topped UW-River Falls 30-16 and just like UW-Platteville was aided on both sides of the ball by Badger state alumni. Quarterback Matt Urmanski of Edgar threw for one touchdown and added two on the ground while running back ShamaJ Williams of Racine Lutheran rushed for 117 yards and a score. Jonte Webb of Marinette hauled in five passes for 143 yards and a score, garnering WIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Defensively, Berkley Corvino of D.C. Everest had a team high ten tackles and two sacks while teammates Kameron Kryzanski of Thorp and Donovan Lucas of Brown Deer recorded interceptions.

UW-Oshkosh faced off with UW-Stout that saw the Titans come away with a 26-23 win. Special teams was huge on both sides of the ball. Kicker Jaydon Haag of Sparta was two for two on field goals including a go-ahead 42-yarder in the fourth quarter for Oshkosh. Not to be outdone, Alec Benzinger of Mukwonago, went three for three on field goals and averaged 41.3 yards per punt for Stout. Alec was named the WIAC Special Teams Player of the Week.

As Missouri Valley Conference foes North Dakota State and Illinois State faced off on Saturday, more than 25 players suited up hailing from the state of Wisconsin. Top-ranked NDSU knocked off sixth-ranked Illinois State 37-3. Logan McCormick and DJ Stewart of Kimberly were a big part of the Bison’s stifling defensive effort. From the other sideline, Ty DeFoest (Marshall), and Jacob Powell (Arrowhead) helped the Redbird defense.

In other FCS play, North Dakota got a big 38-36 win over UC Davis as two former alums made big plays defensively for the Fighting Hawks. La Crosse Logan’s CJ Siegel was clutch at defensive back, recording six tackles and intercepting two passes to halt two separate fourth quarter drives. Noah Larson, a Baraboo alum, also forced a turnover, intercepting a ball.

The Northern Sun Conference continues to have big time plays made by big time players from the Badger State. In Bemidji State’s 21-20 thrilling win over Augustana, Emmett Enright of Madison Memorial, thew a touchdown pass with five seconds left to pull the Beavers to within one point. Running back Makaio Harn of New London then threw the game-winning two-point conversion to seal the deal.

St. Cloud State also won a thrilling game, beating Concorida-St. Paul 18-15 in overtime. Again, a former alum threw the game winning touchdown as Germantown grad Dwayne Lawhorn tossed a three yard touchdown to Anthony Carver, formerly of Wisconsin Lutheran. Kicker Adam Stage of Kimberly connected on four field goals in regulation, accounting for all 12 points.

After rushing for 175 yards last week, Kordell Stillmunkes topped the century mark again as Dubuque College beat Coe College 20-14. The Cuba City grad rushed 34 times for 101 yards and two scores to lead his team.

In other Division 3 play, Martin Luther College beat St. Scholastica 27-6 due to contributions from many former Badger State players. Austin DeNoyer of Lakeside Luthern could not be stopped as he rushed the ball 36 times for 225 yards and two touchdowns. Backfield mate Joshua Kren of Wisconsin Lutheran added 128 yards and a score on the ground, while Mike Radue, also of Wisconsin Lutehran, hauled in a touchdown through the air. Defensively, a pair of Watertown Luther Prep grads made some big plays. Jacob Schmidt had seven tackles and two and a half sacks, while Ian Paulsen recorded two interceptions.

Despite a losing effort this week, Brady Hanson has been a catalyst all year for the Northern Michigan football team. He’s second on the team with 36 tackles and was a playmaker this past weekend in a 27-14 loss to Wayne State. Brady, a Kewaskum alum, had 10 tackles and intercepted two balls in the losing effort.
