Week 9 WisSports.net Team of the Week Nominees

Badger Badgers

Facing unbeaten league leader Waterford, Badger would have been very much on the playoff bubble with a loss. So, the Badgers took things into their own hands, and feet. Running 74 plays (72 of them rush attempts) to 21 for Waterford, Badger controlled the ball and kept it away from the explosive Wolverine offense in a 17-7 victory. The win gets Badger into the postseason for the 14th consecutive year. It was all about ball control, as Badger ground out 293 rushing yards on 72 attempts, averaging just 4.1 yards per attempt. It was a sharp contrast to Waterford, who averaged 13.1 yards per rush attempt, but only managed 13 attempts in the game. Badger built a 17-7 halftime lead by holding the ball for 21 of the 24 first-half minutes. They closed it out by possessing it for ten of the 12 minutes in the fourth quarter.

Chippewa Falls Cardinals

Chippewa Falls got itself onto the playoff bubble and ultimately qualified for the postseason thanks to a 29-25 win over Hudson on Friday night. It was a close one throughout, with the game never separated by more than one score. ChiHi took a 22-17 lead early in the fourth quarter, only to see Hudson go back ahead a few minutes later. The Cardinals wouldn't go away, however, and took the lead for good with just 27 seconds remaining when Hayden Goodman found Tyler Bohland from eight yards out. The victory got Chippewa Falls to 3-4 in league play, and thanks to the win over Hudson, the Cardinals qualified via tiebreaker procedure.

DeForest Norskies

It was the Game of the Week on WisSports.net and one that many observers had been pointing towards all year. Unbeaten and top-ranked Waunakee against unbeaten rival DeForest. The first half was a slugfest, with DeForest leading 7-6 at the half. The Norskies dominated things in the second half, however, pulling away for a resounding 35-13 victory. The defense for DeForest was outstanding once again, allowing just one touchdown (the other Waunakee score came on a kick return) and picking off Warriors' quarterback Caden Nelson three times. Trey Schroeder threw for more than 200 yards with three total touchdowns and Gabe Finley racked up 132 yards on the ground for DeForest, who dropped to Division 3 for the playoffs and received a top seed.

Lakeside Lutheran Warriors

It was a de facto play-in game for the WIAA postseason, as Lakeside Lutheran hosted Lodi on Friday night. Unfortunately one of the quality teams would be left out of the playoffs, and Lakeside made sure it wasn't them. The Warriors led 10-0 at halftime, went up 16-0 early in the third quarter, and held on for a 23-15 victory. Quarterback Matt Davis led the offense, completing 12-of-15 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns, posting a quarterback rating of 155.4. The win got Lakeside Lutheran into the playoffs, while Lodi is left out despite a 6-0 start.

Whitnall Falcons

The Woodland-East has done very well against the Woodland-West in crossover games over the last few years, but that didn't deter Whitnall last Thursday in the Woodland Championship Game. Facing off against Greendale, Whitnall hung right in there, and the game would head to overtime tied at 14. Whitnall scored on its possession, and Greendale followed suit. With Greendale getting the ball first in the second overtime, junior defensive back Ryan Kndziorski stepped in front of a Greendale pass and returned it 82 yards for a walk-off Pick-6 and 27-21 victory. While he would leave with an injury late in the game, Nate Valcarcel had 176 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries.
