PlayInTheDells.com Athlete of the Week Nominees: Nov. 4-11

Carson Dvorak, Sturgeon Bay boys soccer: The Sturgeon Bay boys soccer team was making its eighth appearance at state since 2010, coming short of the gold ball in every year except 2015. Carson was one of the biggest reason why they captured that second championship. In the Division 4 semi-final matchup with Northland Pines, he netted a lone goal and added an assist as Sturgeon Bay won 5-1. Sturgeon Bay faced off with The Prairie School in the championship match. After 90 minutes, it was knotted up at 1-1 and headed to overtime. After a scoreless first overtime, Carson netted the game-winning goal in the 107th minute to make the final score 2-1 and clinch Sturgeon Bay's second championship gold.

Eliot Popkewitz, Verona boys soccer: Verona was making its first ever trip to state in boys soccer over the weekend and came away with its first ever gold ball. Eliot was the catalyst for the Verona squad, getting the scoring going in both of its matches. In the 3-0 win over Kenosha Tremper in the semi-finals, Eliot netted the first goal of the game in the ninth minute. Verona then matched up with Neenah in the Division 1 championship. Eliot, the Big 8 Player of the Year, started the scoring off again in the twelfth minute in the 2-0 win. Verona captured its first ever state championship in boys soccer in its first ever appearance.

Aubrey Hamilton, Arrowhead girls volleyball:  Aubrey had quite the regular season for the Arrowhead girls volleyball team as she was named the Classic 8 Player of the Year. Her success continued into the state tournament. In the 3-1 quarter-final win over Sun Prairie, Aubrey had 26 kills, 16 digs, and two service aces. She followed that up with another 16 kills and two aces in a 3-0 sweep of Burlington in the semifinals. Aubrey finished off the state weekend with 18 kills and 13 digs in the 3-0 sweep of Oconomowoc in the Division 1 championship. Her 60 kills over the three day weekend helped lead Arrowhead to its first ever state championship in girls volleyball.

Maggie Rosen, Clear Lake girls volleyball: Clear Lake was making its first ever state tournament appearance this past weekend at the Resch Center in Green Bay. Maggie was crucial as the team swept both matches in 3-0 fashion. In the semi-final matchup with Newman Catholic, she had 14 kills on a 34.4 attack percentage and three aces. Clear Lake matched up with Catholic Central in the Division 4 championship and Maggie again was effective and efficient. She had a team high 13 kills with a 43.5 attack percentage. Maggie was pivotal into leading Clear Lake to a perfect 38-0 season, and its first ever state championship.

Tony Wisneski, Kimberly boys volleyball: Tony was a crucial assist to Kimberly capturing gold over the weekend in boys volleyball. In the 3-0 quarterfinal win over Kettle Moraine, he had 32 assists on 33 possible and also nine digs. Tony followed that up with 38 assists on 41 possible in their 3-0 win over Brookfield East. Kimberly then matched up with Germantown in the championship attempting to avenge its 2018 loss in the championship. Tony had 31 assists on 35 possible and eight digs as Kimberly beat Germantown 3-1. The top-seeded Papermakers won their first ever state championship in boys volleyball.
