Catholic Memorial hoists the Division 4 state championship trophy

There was a sense of inevitability around the Division 4 playoffs when it was announced that defending Division 3 state champion Catholic Memorial would drop down a division this season. What seemed inevitable became reality when the Crusaders shutout Kiel 35-0 to claim the 2019 WIAA Division 4 state football championship.

Catholic Memorial wasted no time in asserting itself, as Luke Fox hit Joe Sikma for a 65-yard touchdown on the game's first play. After a three-and-out on Kiel's first offensive possession, Catholic Memorial would march for another score when Alex Oeschner ran for a four-yard touchdown.

It was all Catholic Memorial the rest of the way, as the Crusaders built a 27-0 halftime lead while out-gaining the Raiders 320-67 in the first half.

Head coach Bill Young and his staff took the foot off the gas to a large extent in the second half, as a late third quarter touchdown pass from Fox to Obacoso Allen, with following two-point conversion, gave the team a 35-0 lead and running clock the rest of the way. The team's reserves played the final eleven minutes of the game.

Catholic Memorial would finish with 474 yards of offense, compared to 88 total yards for Kiel. Quarterback Luke Fox completed 16-of-23 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns, adding nine rushing attempts for 103 yards and a score. Joe Sikma had a big day catching the ball, hauling in five passes for 138 yards and a touchdown.

It is the second straight state championship for the Crusaders and third in the past four years. The team has four titles overall in seven championship appearances since joining the WIAA in 2000.
