It was a wild one that got extra crazy in the final minutes, but Brookfield East held off Waunakee for a 31-30 victory in the WIAA Division 2 state championship game at Camp Randall Stadium Friday afternoon.

After trailing almost the entire game, Waunakee pulled within one point with just eight seconds remaining when Randy Vojtisek caught a four-yard pass from Quentin Keene. The Warriors faced a similar decision to their Badger-North Conference brethren DeForest did in the previous game, and instead of going for two and the win like the Norskies, Waunakee head coach Pat Rice chose to attempt the extra point.

However, the ball slid off the kicking block on the hold, and the kick sailed wide right.

It wasn't the end of things, however, as Waunakee was able to recover the ensuing onside kick, but the final play went nowhere, and a fumble was recovered by Brookfield East to close out a wild affair.

Brookfield East scored less than two minutes into the game, as quarterback Sam McGath went 44 yards for a touchdown. 

Waunakee responded less than two minutes later, with Cole Mobley hauling in a 32-yard touchdown pass from Quentin Keene to tie things up.

Brookfield East went ahead, for good as it turned out, late in the first quarter when Donavan Hunt scored the first of three rushing touchdowns.

It was a big day for Hunt, who carried the ball 31 times for 227 yards with three first-half touchdowns that helped give the Spartans a 28-10 lead in the second quarter and 28-17 halftime advantage.

A Keen rushing touchdown for Waunakee and a short Joey Prondzinski field goal in the third quarter made it 31-24 in favor of Brookfield East heading into the fourth quarter.

Waunakee drove inside the Brookfield East five-yard line late in the fourth quarter, but a fumbled handoff was recovered by Brookfield East with just 1:30 remaining.

It was eerily similar to the situation for DeForest in the Division 3 title game, as Waunakee had three timeouts and was able to stop the Spartans, forcing a punt. That set up the fateful final drive and missed extra point that would give Brookfield East the win.
