Looking Back

It has been a bit of a slow start to the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference women's basketball season, with most teams getting in just three or four contests to this point.

As seems to be the case every year, there are some changes within the league. Down to just seven women's teams now, the conference does have all seven competing this year, as opposed to past seasons when there were generally one or two teams forced to cancel their seasons just before or just after the year began.

Wausau ruled the league for the last three years, but things appear to be changing a bit in 2019-20. Last night, Richland downed the Huskies 59-42, as the host Roadrunners remain unbeaten in league play, now 5-0 in the WCC and 5-1 overall.

Marinette is also unblemished in conference action, posting a 4-0 conference mark so far.

Washington, Fox Cities, and Marshfield are winless to this point, but are providing solid competition and still looking to get things going in the right direction.

Looking Ahead

Just as on the men's side, this weekend is a big one for the women's teams, who will invade the UW-Baraboo gymnasium for six games over two days. That includes a huge one Friday afternoon when Marinette and Richland, both unbeaten in conference action in the early going, square off at 4:15.

Wausau will be looking to get back on track with a game earlier on Friday against Washington.

Saturday's action also includes Wausau taking on Marinette in what is shaping up to be a big early-season contest. One of Washington or Marshfield will get their first win of the year to close out the event at 6:15.

There is one game on Monday as Washington welcomes in Madison College.

WCC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Macey Klebesadel, Richland

Richland is off to a perfect 5-0 start in conference play behind a balanced offensive attack. Macey Klebesadel, a sophomore from Riverdale, is the team's leading scorer, averaging 15.8 points per game. She adds 10.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 3.5 blocks, and 2.5 steals per contest as well. While stats are not available for last night's win over Wausau, in last Saturday's victory against Fox Cities she had nine points to go with nine rebounds, five assists, five blocks, and four steals.
