Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 6 p.m. on Mondays

Alumni Update

We are only one week into December and the amount of talented alumni from the state of Wisconsin continues to impress on the hardwood. Multiple player of the week winners, 1,000 point scorers, and record breaking performances have been the highlight of the past iterations of the Round-up.

Tyler Herro of Whitnall was mentioned back in week one as having an outstanding rookie season for the Miami Heat; one that sees him towards the top of most lists of best rookies thus far. Last week the Heat took down the Chicago Bulls 110-105 in overtime, and the former Whitnall great showed his prowess.

With seven seconds left in regulation, Tyler knocked in a three to put the Heat up two only to have the Bulls tie it and force overtime. In overtime, he knocked down three more triples and scored 11 of the teams 13 points, demonstrating his ability to score in bunches. He finished with a game high 27 points.

Speaking of scoring in bunches, that is all Kyle Monroe of Ashwaubenon does at Michigan Tech. He’s been mentioned twice already in the Round-up due to his two GLIAC Player of the Week wins. This past week, Kyle went over the 2,000 point mark in his career.

On that same Michigan Tech team, Owen White of Rhinelander, starts for the Huskies and averages 11.1 points per game. Both Isaac Appleby of Eau Claire Memorial and Eric Carl of Kaukauna see significant minutes off the bench as well.

In other GLIAC news, Northern Michigan boasts a pair of Badger State alums in their starting lineup. Alec Fruin of Beloit Turner and Noah Parcher of La Crosse Central average 8.6 and 7.4 points respectively for the Wildcats.

Chris Knight has spent his first two season at Dartmouth excelling on the court, especially the defensive side. He was named to the 208-19 All-Ivy League Second Team as a sophomore. This year, he’s continuing his progression. In an 83-80 loss to Georgia State, Chris, a Madison Memorial grad, had a season high 23 points on nine of eleven shooting. He added nine rebounds, five assists, and three blocks to fill the stat sheet.

Like Kyle Monroe, Brandon Myer has been exceptional at Minnesota Duluth throughout his career. This past week was an impressive one for the Superior High School grad. Over three victories, Brandon averaged over 24 points and nine rebounds per game, including a pair of double-doubles. He was 15 of 22 from the field (68%) and added five blocks and five steals. Brandon was named the Northern Sun Conference-North Player of the Week for the second time already this season.

Jaylen Key played three seasons at Northern Illinois before transferring to the University of New Orleans this past offseason. The Homestead grad has taken a spot in the starting rotation and despite a 90-54 loss LSU, recorded 13 points and seven rebounds. On the season Jaylen is averaging 7.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

A pair of East Troy High School graduates made splashes in the Midwest Conference this past week.

Michael Polakoski saw significant minutes off the bench in Beloit College’s two losses. All Michael did was average 18 points per contest while shooting 15 of 25 (60%) from the field.

St. Norbert College picked up a pair of victories behind the play of another East Troy alum, Joe Ciriacks. In an 84-71 win over Lake Forest College, Joe poured in 23 points. He followed that up with 24 points in a 70-69 squeaker over Ripon College. Joe’s back-to-back 20 point outings earned him Midwest Conference Player of the Week honors.

In speaking of Ripon, former Ripon High School standout Ben Vander Plas had quite the day in Ohio’s 81-54 win over Tennessee Tech. Ben had a game high 21 points and 11 rebounds, while added four assists and two blocks.

Taurus Adams has been a double-double machine for Southern Connecticut State early on this season. The Brown Deer alum poured in 25 points and hauled in 11 rebounds in a 74-71 win over New Haven this past week. That performance was his fourth double-double in eight games.

Speaking of double-doubles, Levi Borchert recorded his first in his college career as UW-Oshkosh lost to Alma College 88-81. The Kimberly grad had 12 points and 12 rebounds in defeat.

In other WIAC action, Carter Voelker helped UW-Platteville steamroll to a pair of wins last week to better their record to 8-0. Carter, a Kiel grad, had 17 points in an 82-68 win over Hope College. He added another 19 points and six rebounds in a 96-63 win over Olivet College. Carter shot 14 of 22 (64%) from the field in the two wins. He was named the WIAC Player of the Week.

To end with, the Wisconsin Badgers have had a very up and down and heavily scrutinized start to the 2019-20 season. Redshirt sophomore Kobe King has been one of the more consistent players for the team, averaging 12.1 points and four rebounds per game. Last Saturday in a 84-64 dominating win over Indiana, Kobe recorded a career high 24 points. The La Crosse Central grad was 10 of 15 from the field in the victory.
