Each week WSN will take a look at the happenings in the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference, which includes many of the two-year campuses in the UW system. A look back at the big performances and news from the week before, a look ahead to some of the big games coming up, plus a Player of the Week will be featured.
Everyone is still adjusting to getting back to the regular business of hoops after a lengthy break for the holidays and semester, and information is a bit slow coming in from the last few days' games.
What we do know is that Baraboo opened the second semester last Saturday with an 88-67 win over Manitowoc in a cross-division game, as the Fighting Spirits are looking to remain on top of the WCC-West. No stats or further information is available for the game unfortunately.
Also on Saturday, Wausau won a high-scoring affair over Fond du Lac 93-89, rallying from a 45-42 halftime deficit. Seven players scored at least six points for the victorious Huskies, including a pair of players over 20 points. Fond du Lac had five players reach double figures, with another at nine points, in the loss.
As the second semester gets underway, Sheboygan sits atop the East Division at 6-0, with a group of five teams all within a game-and-a-half of each other well behind the Wombats. Baraboo is a game-and-a-half ahead of Wausau for the lead in the West Division. Things can change significantly in the second semester as players join teams and leave rosters, so there's a long ways to go to decide division titles and the teams that will qualify for the state tournament.
While the Waukesha at Richland game tonight has been postponed, there are four other games on the schedule as things pick up quite a bit in Wisconsin Collegiate Conference play. Baraboo will look to remain unbeaten in the West Division as the Spirits welcome in Barron this evening. Marinette travels to Fond du Lac, Wausau welcomes in Manitowoc, and Fox Cities hosts Marshfield in other games.
Three games are scheduled on Saturday, with both division leaders in action at home. Baraboo hosts Marinette, while East leader Sheboygan welcomes in Richland. Southeast teams Waukesha and Washington also meet up on Saturday afternoon.
Former Rosholt High School standout Cade Bowker helped the Wausau men's basketball team start the new year the right way in a come-from-behind 93-89 victory over Fond du Lac on Saturday. The six-foot, three-inch first-player player poured in a college career-high 27 points in the win as Wausau moved to 5-2 on the season.
