Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. After a holiday hiatus, the Boys Basketball Alumni Round-up is back! I hope you all had a great holiday and new year and more importantly, are ready for some more basketball. Despite the holidays, basketball season didn’t stop. College basketball, though lessened of a schedule, continued through the late parts of December and early January.

In speaking of not stopping, Tyrese Haliburton has done just that at Iowa State, despite a bit of a disappointing start to the season as a team. Tyrese, an Oshkosh North grad put up 22 points in back to back games vs Purdue Fort Wayne and TCU. In the 81-79 loss to TCU, he recorded his first triple-double of the season. Tyrese had 22 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists and was named the Big 12 Player of the Week. Tyrese continues to shoot up many draft boards around the country due to his versatility and efficiency.

Speaking of Player of the Week honorees, Kyle Monroe continues to rack them up at Division 2 Michigan Tech. The Ashwaubenon grad scored 89 points over three wins for the Huskies; including a 35 point, 10 rebound performance in an 80-68 win over Wayne State. Kyle became the second leading scorer in school history with 2,108 career points thus far. Kyle was named the GLIAC Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks for his dominance.

WIAC conference season finally kicked off and UW-Oshkosh started it in style. The Titans handed UW-La Crosse its first loss of the season in a 79-63 win. Appleton West’s Will Mahoney worked his way into the starting rotation and scored 21 points in the win.

Adam Fravert may not have had his best game for Oshkosh against UW-La Crosse, but the Marshfield High School alum scored 30 plus points in back-to-back games for UW-Oshkosh. Adam was named the WIAC Player of the Week for the stretch between December sixteenth and January fifth.

Like Mahoney, Keshawn Justice has worked his way into the starting rotation. The Madison East grad and sophomore starts for Division 1 Santa Clara. Since his insertion into that spot, the Broncos have reeled off six straight wins. Keshawn himself has scored 20 or more points in three of the last four games, shooting 67% throughout that time frame.

A team that took down UW-Oshkosh over the holiday break was St. Norbert College. Green Bay Preble’s Connor Curtis had a game high 28 points, nine rebounds, and five assists in the 96-95 overtime thrilling win. He scored seven of the eleven points in overtime and in doing so was named the Midwest Conference Player of the Week.

Arkansas Pine Bluff has started off the season a little rocky, going 2-11 in their first 13 games. Despite that, Terrance Banyard played exceptionally in one of their wins, an 80-76 squeaker over Mississippi Valley State. The Destiny High School alum scored 11 points while also hauling down 11 rebounds.

In speaking of double-doubles, Ben Vander Plas did just that in a pair of games for Ohio. Ben, a Ripon High School alum, scored 24 points and had 11 rebounds in an 82-76 win over Morehead State. He followed that up with 16 points and 13 rebounds in a 77-65 loss to Western Michigan.

Andrew Bruggink has been playing extremely well for Wisconsin Lutheran this season, already being named NACC Player of the Week in week one. Five days before Christmas, Andrew, a Brookfield Central grad, gave the Wisconsin Lutheran fans an early Christmas present. With .4 seconds left, Andrew took an inbound pass and buried a three pointer to give the Warriors a 71-68 win. He finished with 18 points which was matched by teammate Zach Zuleger of Kettle Moraine Lutheran who also added 10 rebounds.

To finish, Alex Arians has started to assert himself on the offensive side of the court fo South Dakota State. The Madison Edgewood High School alum recorded double digit scoring outputs in four straight games. He added 31 rebounds in the four games and had a double-double in a 91-56 win over Western Illinois. Alex shot 68% from the field throughout the four games.
