Black Hawk extends winning streak to 40 games; Badger Conference Challenge wrap-up

The state's longest active winning streak is now 40 games. 

Black Hawk, the defending Division 5 state champions, defeated Melrose-Mindoro, 78-62 in a meeting of 11-0 teams entering the contest at JustAgame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells. 

The Warriors led 43-35 at the half. Melrose-Mindoro got within five at 55-50 with 9:27 left before Black Hawk would finish the game on a 23-12 run to earn the 16-point victory. 

Senior Natalie Leuzinger, a Wisconsin walk-on, finished with a game-high 28 points for coach Mike Flanagan and the Warriors. She went 9-for-11 from the floor, went 6-for-7 from the free throw line and made four of five 3-point attempts. 

Leuzinger now has 1,578 career points, three away from surpassing former Green Bay standout and current Darlington interim head coach Jen Wellnitz as the program's all-time leading scorer. 

The Warriors also got a strong performance from junior Bailey Butler, a Green Bay commit, who finished with 20 points, including going 4-for-7 from behind the arc, and added seven assists. 

Melrose-Mindoro was led by senior Mesa Byom, a 6-foot-3 South Dakota State signee, who finished with a 26 points. 

Senior Calette Lockington, a Viterbo University signee, added 13 points for coach Joey Arneson and the Mustangs. 

Black Hawk, the top-ranked team in the Division 5 WisSports.net Coaches Poll, improve to 12-0 on the season. 

Melrose-Mindoro, ranked No. 2 in the Division 4 WSN Coaches Poll, drop to 11-1 on the season. 


Jada Donaldson, Beaver Dam

The third annual Badger Conference Girls Basketball Challenge was held this past weekend at Beaver Dam High School. 

The North went 5-2 on Saturday; Mount Horeb vs. Monroe was postponed due to travel concerns. 

Last season, the South won six of the eight games.

Mckenzie Bestor, soph., Reedsburg -- Bestor, a 5-foot-6 guard, scored the go-ahead basket with 56.5 seconds remaining and finished with 18 points in the Beavers' 58-55 win over Edgewood. Reedsburg improves to 10-4 overall. 

Naomi Breunig, jr., Sauk Prairie -- Breunig, a 5-foot-10 wing/guard, scored a team-best 19 points, including going 4-for-4 from the line and connecting on 3-pointer in the 76-74 victory against Milton. Sauk Prairie improves to 7-6 overall. 

Abbie Campion, sr., Milton -- Campion, a 5-foot-11 guard, scored a game-high 27 points and added six rebounds, six steals and three assists in the loss to Sauk Prairie. Milton drops to 4-10 overall. 

Jada Donaldson, sr., Beaver Dam -- Donaldson, a 5-foot-6 guard and Milwaukee signee, scored a game-high 17 points for the Golden Beavers in a 59-45 win. Beaver Dam, the top-ranked team in the Division 2 WSN Coaches Poll, moves to 12-2 on the season, with both losses against out-of-state opponents. 

Tya Maas, jr., Watertown -- Maas, a 6-foot-1 forward, scored a team-high 13 points in the Goslings' loss to Waunakee. Watertown drops to 8-5 overall. 

Megan Mickelson, sr., DeForest -- Mickelson, a 5-foot-11 forward, scored a game-high 17 points for the Norskies in the 48-39 win over Monona Grove. DeForest, ranked No. 5 in the D2 WSN Coaches Poll, moves to 11-2 overall. 

Lauren Statz, jr., Waunakee -- Statz, a 5-foot-9 guard, netted a team-high 12 points in the Warriors' 58-37 victory against Watertown. Waunakee improves to 10-3 overall. 

Maggie Trautsch, sr., DeForest -- Trautsch, a 5-foot-10 point guard, tallied 14 points in the Norskies' win over Monona Grove. DeForest, ranked No. 5 in the D2 WSN Coaches Poll, moves to 11-2 overall.

Mahra Wieman, soph., Reedsburg -- Wieman, a 5-foot-9 guard, scored a game-high 19 points for the Beavers in the victory over Edgewood. Reedsburg improves to 10-4 overall. 


TIm Chase, Beaver Dam

Coach Tim Chase takes medical leave

Beaver Dam head coach Tim Chase has taken indefinite medical leave as a teacher and coach after receiving news he has a cancerous tumor in his colon. 

Chase has guided the Golden Beavers to the past three Division 2 state championships and is 264-97 in his 15 years as head coach. Beaver Dam is currently 12-2 overall and the top-ranked team in Division 2. 

Coach Chase told Madison.com that he hopes to be cleared by the postseason.
